Biden abruptly ended his re-election campaign yesterday.

In a letter posted on social media, he wrote,

I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely

on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.

Biden had huddled through the weekend with a small group of family and advisors at his beach

house in Delaware. That's where he's been recovering from COVID.

He had all but made up his mind Saturday night to bow out of the race.

Yesterday afternoon he told senior White House and

campaign staff about his decision. Moments later his letter was posted on X.

Biden's announcement sent shock waves through the political world,

and it plunges the Democratic Party into an unprecedented scramble

to choose a new nominee to face former President Donald Trump.

Shortly after his announcement, in another social media post, Biden endorsed his

Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place as the Democratic Party nominee for President.
