Summary

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. When something goes wrong in our lives, sometimes we fixate on its emotional impact -- how it makes us feel in the moment -- rather than what difference it will make in the long run (which may be minimal). Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind author Dr. Srini Pillay shows us how to control this emotional feedback with the CIRCA mnemonic. Make sure to check out his entire episode: The Power of the Unfocused Mind, and his other Minisode Monday:  Dabbling: Not Just for Dilettantes! The Cheat Sheet: When something goes wrong in your life, ask yourself: is this important, or just traumatic? We can gauge this by using the CIRCA mnemonic. C: Chunking. Break down the problem into its component parts; solve it over a period of time. I: Ignore mental chatter. Observe your thoughts; don't become your thoughts. R: Reality check. Remind yourself that "this too shall pass." C: Control check. Is the problem something you actually have a hand in, or is it something like weather or politics? A: Attention shift. Move your attention from the problem (the past) to the solution (the future). Hey, Jordan Harbinger here from the Art of Charm. Welcome to Mini-Sodemunday, your weekly

something quick and actionable that you can implement right away that'll make you more

magnetic. And effective. We're back with Dr. Sreeni Pillay. One of the things that I took

0:18.6

away from Tinker Dabble Doodle Try was that stressed brains think everything is important

0:25.2

even the negative stuff. And this could not be more true in my case. So if that's true

0:29.6

across the board, this is kind of a dangerous phenomenon because when our brains are stressed,

0:35.0

we focus on everything. And sometimes it looks like we're focusing only on the negative,

0:40.2

but focusing on everything is just as bad somehow. Yes, absolutely. A lot of things to say

0:45.1

about this. Firstly, stress precipitates habit pathways in the brain. And so the reason

0:50.3

we often don't move forward in our lives is that we get stuck in habit health. Stress,

0:55.9

it actually impacts your attention. And when it impacts your attention, what stress and

1:00.6

fear do is they capture your attention and they make you hyper vigilant, which means anything

1:05.5

that's coming your way is tagged with danger. It's like danger danger danger danger. So all

1:11.0

of a sudden, all if you have for arguments, say 10 units of attentional resources, if

1:16.2

seven of those units are taken up looking out for danger because you're getting all this

1:20.0

feedback, you've only got three left to innovate. So what you want to do is learn how to release

1:25.8

a few more units of attention. So you've got attentional units to do what you need to do.

1:31.8

Now in Tinker, the context in which I've mentioned this was was based on agility and agile

1:37.0

learning. And I called it feedback control. And one of the things I talked about was that

1:41.4

a lot of times we take people are always saying you should be open to feedback. I think

1:45.0

up to an point, because I think at some point, your short term memory cup becomes overwhelmed
