Summary

I've waited years to bring someone on the podcast to talk money because I wanted to find someone who was knowledgeable about finances and also deeply connected to the practice of yoga. I found her in this week's guest, financial coach and accountant, Chioma Njoku.

Here are a few of the things we cover:

* Why Chioma feels many yoga teachers are uncomfortable with money

* The mindset issue that keeps many in the yoga community from making good financial choices

* Her own personal struggles with money (even though she is a professional accountant!) and how her yoga practice helped her be more responsible with her money

* Practical money advice for yoga teachers—such as what to consider when you price yoga classes, finding a bookkeeper and financial coach, and more!

Hey everyone, I'm Andrea Ferretti, and this is episode 253 of Yoga Land.

0:09.2

Today my guest is Chiama and Jaku. Chiama is a certified public accountant. She is known on

0:16.6

Instagram as Mindfully Chiama, and that's spelled C-H-I-O-M-A. And when I first found her,

0:25.4

came across her on Instagram, I just lurked and followed her silently for a while, trying to

0:31.5

figure out who she was. Her Instagram handle really intrigued me, and her website is also the

0:37.2

MindfulBookkeeper.com. So I felt like, hmm, I bet she has the background and the qualities

0:43.3

that I'm looking forward to talk about finances and money on the show. It's a topic that we all

0:49.2

have to deal with, and it's a topic that I've thought about talking about on the show for a very

0:53.3

long time, but I really just wanted to find someone who both blended accounting and finance

0:59.6

with yoga and mindfulness, and she is that person. So today's show, since I haven't had a show

1:06.9

about money in, you know, more than five years of having the show, it was hard to fit everything

1:12.3

all into one show. So this can be a continuing conversation if you all are interested and have more

1:16.8

questions, but I tried to hit some conceptual points as well as some really practical strategic

1:24.8

points for the show with my questions for her. And so she very generously shared her own

1:31.4

background of having financial struggles, even though she had an accounting background,

1:36.8

and how it really took practicing yoga to come out of that.

1:42.7

And her story, I think, illustrates really well the two points that so many of us

1:48.3

vacillate between which are not feeling like we are enough or we make enough money,

1:55.1

and then we swing back toward feeling guilty for wanting to make money or feeling like we are not

2:03.1

valuable enough to ask for more money. So lots of concepts here that we talk through that will

2:08.9

hopefully be helpful to you. And then I also ask her how to price oneself right now in the middle

2:17.7

of a pandemic, how do we approach that? How do we approach that when so many of you are teaching
