Summary

Is success down to luck, or obsessive hard work? For chart-topping artist Jason Derulo routine and discipline are at the heart of his success.

In this chat with Fearne, Jason explains why he feels it’s his obsession with his craft that’s helped him create the life he dreamed of as a kid. They also wonder when taking risks is reckless, and when it’s important in order to keep growing. Plus, why is it often the case that we grow most immediately after failure?

Jason’s book, Sing Your Name Out Loud, is out now.

Hello and welcome to Happy Plakes with me, Fern Cotton. This is the show that

0:06.4

encourages you to define your own success. Today I'm chatting to Jason Derulo.

0:12.4

Creating a routine for yourself so much so that it's not about your feelings,

0:17.2

right? It's not about how you feel that day. It's like I get up in the morning, I go to the gym at this time,

0:23.0

I eat at this time, I have this amount of time set for my craft, and waking up and

0:29.6

doing that same pattern every single day, no matter if you're feeling down, no matter if you're

0:36.1

not feeling as confident that day, you're still getting closer to whatever that goal is

0:43.0

because it's part of your pattern. You've created a pattern for yourself.

0:47.2

Jason was just 18 years old when he burst into the charts with the instant number one song,

0:53.6

what'd you say? He started the song with arguably one of the catchiest lines in pop music history,

1:00.8

his own name will come back to that infamous line in a moment. Since then, his commitment to

1:06.7

entertaining through music and more recently on TikTok has been unwavering. You'll realize quite

1:13.6

soon in this chat that Jason is absolutely forensic about analyzing music and socials industry data.

1:21.6

He's similarly disciplined about routine and habit building too. Everything's planned from

1:27.6

what he'll eat to when he'll work on music, and all this attention to detail has objectively made him

1:34.2

a worldwide success. But it was really interesting to hear that failure also plays a part in his evolution.

1:42.3

Failure is, in his words, what awakens the beast. And often paves the way for accelerated personal

1:50.0

and professional growth. Jason's put everything he's learned about pursuing success,

1:55.7

whatever that means to you, into a book called, yep, sing your name out loud, brilliant title.

2:02.0

I found it fascinating talking to someone with such clear ambitions. Voicing and giving credence

2:08.8

to my own big dreams is something I definitely like to get better at. So I'm really interested to hear

2:15.0

what you make of this chat. Right, let's do it. Here's the show.
