Summary

This week on RunPod, fresh from her samba on the Strictly dance floor. Jenni catches up with former Home Secretary, the Rt Hon Jacqui Smith. Ok, so Jacqui might not have what it takes to win the Strictly glitterball but she is a nifty runner. She first turned to running about 10 years ago and claims it was her time in the Cabinet that led her to switching things up. Jacqui’s life has changed somewhat in the past decade, not just in terms of work but she’s also in a new relationship. Running is also key to helping her feel fantastic and is her happy place. A joy to listen to and should help keep you going on your run too!

Welcome to Runport, the right honourable Jackie Smith. Hello. Hello, Jenny. It's lovely to be here.

0:53.8

Oh, I bet it's a bit different. That little

0:56.3

intro that I gave you, my goodness, how the world has changed for you. Indeed. Yeah. Gosh,

1:02.7

you took me back, as you say, to those first days as some Home Secretary. I mean, I'd been a

1:07.9

minister for eight years by then, but even so, being made

1:11.7

home secretary was a bit of a thing and then being woken up the morning after you've got the

1:18.2

job quite early by your private secretary to be told, as you say, that there had been a, luckily

1:23.6

at that point, foiled terror attack in Haymarket, London.

1:28.0

And then the next day for the terrorists to drive their jeep into the front of Glasgow airport

1:33.4

was a bit of a sort of being thrown in at the deep end.

1:36.9

Thank goodness, nobody apart from the terrorists themselves was injured.

1:40.5

But it certainly made me realise what a job being Home Secretary was going to be.
