Hi, it's Andy here and welcome to Radio Headspace until Wednesday morning. So I have a question

for you. Is it ever okay to lie? It's a question that came up just recently. Someone was asking

my opinion about it. I think assuming that I would naturally say absolutely not, it's never

okay to lie. And I'm not advocating it just to be clear right the outset here. I'm not

suggesting it is a good thing. I think whenever possible we should of course always try

to lean into the truth. But I feel like it's not always black and white. I feel like it's

not always quite so clear. And I was reminded of, as we were chatting about it the other day,

I was reminded of a story that was told to me as a monk by one of my teachers. And he

was talking about a man who had had so long complicated story. I'll try and keep it

short. A man who had had an affair, this lady and this lady's husband was chasing after

him through the village and this monk had given him shelter in his small home. And this

man came to the door and said, you know I'm looking for this person. If I find him I'm

going to kill him. And the monk thought, well he'd taken a vow never to lie and to always

be honest. At the same time, if he told the truth, then this man would barge past him.

He would undoubtedly kill the adulterer and who knows what he might do to the monk himself.

And in doing that, the monk was thinking this through, thinking well not only is someone
