Summary

In this episode, Chris Do sits down with Tansel Ali, a four-time Australian Memory Champion, to explore how anyone can train their brain to remember anything — from names and speeches to entire books or phone directories. Together, they unpack the science and art of storytelling for memory, the role of emotion in recall, and how tools like spaced repetition and the memory palace can transform how we learn. Tansel explains that memory isn’t a talent but a trainable skill that anyone can develop. Listeners will walk away with clear, actionable techniques to strengthen their focus, recall, and retention. Okay, people, my next guest is a person who's a four-time memory master champion from Australia.

0:06.1

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because I always see people who have an

0:10.8

incredible memory as having a gift. They always tell you it's not a gift. It's something you can

0:15.1

learn and develop and anyone can do this. And if you are a person who struggles with remembering

0:19.4

things, like you can't remember a name or an actor in a movie or maybe something more important, you're giving a big presentation in front of board members and you have a hard time recalling what it is you're supposed to say.

0:31.0

And maybe the most practical application of this is you need to remember something for a piece of content that you're going to share under 60 seconds.

0:38.4

And if you're like me, you struggle with this kind of stuff.

0:40.5

So welcome to the show, Tansell.

0:43.1

Hi, my name is Tansell and you are listening to the future.

0:50.6

For people who don't know who you are, can you please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit of your backstory?

0:55.4

Yeah, my name's Tancel. Some people call me Tinsul, Konsul, or yell at, hey, you, Tencil. I have many names.

1:03.1

But what I generally do is I show people memory skills, which they can use to do things like remember speeches or pass their exams and

1:14.8

remember people's names, things like that. So it is a skill, but one that not many people know of.

1:21.6

And what's interested me is that why won't we taught these skills in school? So I've just been

1:27.2

for the past 20 odd years

1:28.6

trying to get this message out there that this is something anyone can do and use as well effectively.

1:36.0

The first thing I have to ask you is when you are doing one of these credible challenges,

1:40.9

like when you've memorized two yellow pages, does that stay with you or

1:46.3

do you just remember it for long enough to do the test?

1:49.5

The Yellow Pages phone book, if anyone remembers it, the basic usage of that is if you're

1:54.6

short, you stand on it to get something high.

1:57.9

That's the whole idea behind it.
