my colleague and co-host as we explore hotel Mars and the evidence that we have in our solar system

and beyond of mysteries to be solved, especially with regard to life anywhere. We welcome a

senior astronomer at an institute fellow at the SETI Institute, Seth Shostak. Dr. Seth Shostak is

the author of Confessions of an Alien Hunter. Right now, we're looking at the organization itself

of SETI, so I begin Seth by congratulating you for your book and asking a simple straightforward

what does SETI stand for and what is your mission? Good evening to you.

Thank you, John. Well, SETI, which is only one letter different from my name,

by coincidence, stands for the search for extra terrestrial intelligence. In other words,

this is a search for life in space, but not just any life. This has to be life that's smart enough

to be able to hold up its side of the conversation, if you will.

And your mission right now over these many years is to search, to build an apparatus,

how do you think of it now, Seth? Well, the way it's been done and is still being done,

the idea of being, as you say, to find our cosmic brothers, other intelligent

intelligence could be some sort of alien or even machine intelligence elsewhere in the galaxy.

The way we do that is use big antennas known as radio telescopes and point them in the directions

of some nearby star systems hoping to pick up a signal that would betray somebody's existence.
