Summary

A climby sprinty kind of day for the Giro d'Italia stage 3, with Bora and Peter Sagan hoping to distance the other sprinters and catch the break before the line. Things wouldn't be easy for them and they had the GC teams to worry about. LR and Benji also discuss the Lefevre comments regarding Almeida and Sam Bennett leaving Quickstep at the end of the year, whether he is bluffing and where they could go.

Welcome back to the Lantern Rouge Cycling Podcast with Ben Jean-Naisen.

This is Stage 3 of the Giro d'Italia, the recap of it.

0:08.4

The first Monday of the Giro, they might have got the two stages mixed around the profiles.

0:14.1

Some people say having a flat sprint on Sunday and the sort of climbing sprinty stage on Stage 3 from

0:22.9

Biella, Biella to Canali, 191 Ks, pretty flat, a couple of little rollers in the first 115 Ks.

0:31.4

And then the climbing is in this 70 km section.

0:35.3

There's a 7.5 K, 5% climb, 10 K valley, 5 Ks, 5% descent, 5.5 Ks, 5.3% longer descent,

0:46.0

and then cresting 15 Ks from the finish.

0:49.4

The bonus seconds, not the Chiquimino points, the second IS is a climb, 2.6 Ks at about 7% is telling me.

0:59.6

Little rise with about 8 Ks to go, 500 meters at 6.3%.

1:08.2

So it's a real all-at-line stage, classic stage for someone like Magnus Court, Peter Sagan, Michael Matthews, Sonny Cobb early.

1:18.0

But we only have one of those here, sorry, I said it'd be going through a few again today,

1:22.8

but yeah, just Peter Sagan here, he was the out and out favourite, and it solo was the second in the

1:28.0

batting, and then I think even you and God given a pretty good chance in the top five in the

1:33.2

batting, which Benji and I were not in agreement with. But a break went Benji, as was predicted,

1:40.7

and it didn't look that strong on the surface, it kind of looked like a pro-conti TV coverage break

1:48.4

once again. Yeah, Simon Pelo was in there, he was the first rider of Androni in the breakway to

1:54.3

get away, Zokarato, Rivi, Van der Berch, Kujar, Albanese and Van der Horne. The rules in this

2:01.4

break were simply that we have Pelo who's always aggressive, he's kind of like the low-key Thomas

2:07.8

and then we have, for example, Albanese who is most likely spending all his energy on getting

2:15.0

as many KM points as possible. I think Rivi is a teammate of Albanese as well, if I recall correctly,

2:21.2

so to write us from a holocometa in the breakaway in this stage. Now, from this breakaway,
