Summary

This week we talk about what it really looks like to think ahead in a business. Instead of getting stuck reacting to today’s problems, we look at how small, intentional planning can make everything smoother — from scheduling and staffing to equipment, goals, and long-term projects. It’s about choosing direction instead of drift. The big idea is simple: forward thinking isn’t fancy. It’s noticing what keeps tripping you up, fixing it before it becomes a pattern, and giving yourself space to plan for what’s coming. When you do that consistently, the future gets a lot easier to manage. 🔗 Links – Cat & Cloud: Instagram www.instagram.com/catcloudcoffee/ Webstore www.catandcloud.com/ We are Cat & Cloud Coffee. Started by three friends trying to pursue their passions with the mission to inspire connection by creating memorable experiences, and we created this podcast to continue forming those connections inside and out of our cafes. The Cat & Cloud podcast was created as a space for us to share our experiences in the coffee industry and starting a business. Each week we sit down to talk about new challenges as business owners, how we utilize our mission and values to make decisions, and answer questions from our listening community. If you’re looking to expand your coffee knowledge, get some advice for your own small business, or just like the vibes, give us a listen! Enjoy!

Welcome to the morning, everybody. Welcome to the podcast. It's Monday for us. I don't know what day it is for you, but I hope you're having the best day ever, whatever that looks like. How do we get into this? Like what are you envisioning framing? So we've been doing a bunch of, how do you say, business development doesn't quite sell it. No, I mean, is it kind of bigger picture kind of vision planning?

0:25.3

I mean, part of it's vision planning, but then part of it is organizational planning.

0:30.1

Yeah, I mean, is it broken down into like where you want to go and then how you want to get there?

0:34.7

I think that's probably a reasonable way to sum it up.

0:37.3

Yeah, which I mean, again, stepping back, it's like, I hope that every business would think

0:43.8

about this, you know, maybe, hopefully, I mean, from day one, or at least at certain points

0:50.1

in their development as a business where you get to certain, I think, logical points where you've kind of accomplished. And maybe that's a better way. Maybe in the beginning you're kind of just trying to survive. Right. If you have a business that lasts for more than three years, cool. Then you're better than, you're in rare air already. Better than like 95% of all the other businesses that didn't make it that long. Yeah, that's fair.

1:12.1

Yeah, that's really interesting.

1:13.4

But I feel like there's like a natural point where you've kind of, from the very

1:17.3

beginning, you've kind of achieved what you set out to achieve.

1:20.4

And then, you know, then it's time to kind of sit and look and think about what's next.

1:28.5

Yeah.

1:28.8

How do you feel about, or was there a point at which you felt like we had achieved

1:34.9

the initial goals, not just in terms of the physical things, but where you're like,

1:42.4

yeah, I feel good about this.

1:43.6

I think it's

1:44.8

is conflicting for me because i think some of that happened kind of through like

1:48.6

covid kind of got in the way of a lot of that so i mean i think we were on the path to i think

1:55.9

what our initial right i mean i mean we've got to step back to like what our initial

2:00.1

it was three it was three stores in five years yeah that was the nuts and I mean, we had to step back to what our initial idea was.

2:01.6

It was three stores in five years.
