So I don't know what your experiences of trying to find quiet.

I know for most people it is really really difficult to find quiet space.

In fact he's one of the most common things people ask me, is it possible to meditate, is

even possible to train your mind when it's very busy.

I was reminded this the other day I was reading one of my teachers, Tibetan Lama, has written

a book about his life and he was talking about one of the biggest challenges of his life.

He went into retreat for a very long period of time and he made a commitment for 25 years.

I think he ended up doing about 12 plus years before being asked to come out and run the

monastery.

Anyway, while he was in retreat they started doing a building project right next door to

where he was doing his retreat and he said for many years actually his practice became

sort of how to work skillfully with all of the surrounding noise.

Because I think most of us we would assume that the external noise in our life that somehow

interferes with our mind.

That gets in the way of peace of mind.

If we could only get away from that then we would be able to experience peace of mind.

But if you sat down for any length of time it may have been on holiday when you've gone

away it might have been taken some time out to relax.

Maybe it was during your meditation you'll know that even when you remove the external

noise there still can be an experience of quiet on the inside.

So we have some internal noise as well.
