It's Earth Day this week, an event that we have been observing for more than half a century now.

And in 2024, it's hard to look away from the climate crisis happening all around us. We're seeing and feeling it every single day.

The oceans are rising, the winters are warmer, the storms are more severe.

Sometimes these problems feel so large and so intractable. It's hard not to ask the

question, what can I do.

You know, not long ago I was having dinner with a friend who had just changed jobs.

I asked her, what was so wrong with the thing you were doing?

It was so cool, you loved it, you were so good at it.

She said, you know, I was having so much anxiety about the climate and one day I decided I just had to work on it every day.

I love this story because it wasn't like she had a career as an environmental scientist. She really didn't.

But she was able to take her skills and transform them into something that mattered to her and really to all of us a lot.

Today I want to explore how we make these kinds of transitions. It's how I want our show to observe Earth Day.

First we're going to talk to a woman who shifted gears in her early 40s, and then we'll catch up briefly
