Summary

Like most -isms in our world, ageism can be pervasive in the workplace. Older employees might be passed over for new opportunities, expected to fall behind on technology, and generally underestimated just because of their age. Today’s guest is optimistic about the future for workers 50 years and older. Kerry Hannon is the author of “In Control at 50+: How to Succeed in The New World of Work.” She sits down with Jessi to discuss how we can set ourselves up for success and new opportunities well into our 50s and 60s. Follow Kerry Hannon on LinkedIn and check out her book here. Follow Jessi Hempel on LinkedIn and order her debut memoir, now in paperback. them. You probably know the type. Anyhow, last fall we were catching up and she

told me that she'd gotten to feel pretty lousy about her job. She had one, working in media,

and it was a fine gig on paper. It paid enough, the work was okay. But my friend

had just reached this new moment in her life. Her youngest child had gone to college and her partner had passed

away a few years earlier. She found herself unencumbered with new found time and she didn't want just a job.

She didn't want a coast.

to make more money.

She was professionally ambitious, but the message she got

from her boss was just chill out. What do you want to work so hard for now at this stage?

1:32.3

And that, well that's a form of ageism, an

is that is at the heart of today's episode. Ageism is a tricky one. The older we get, the more we encounter moments where we begin to wonder.

1:47.0

How does this perception of our age impact us at work?

1:51.0

Often it's not something we can know for sure, more of a suspicion that shadows us.
