Summary

My friends Bekki Hood and Emily Cushing joins us to talk about their new book (published by Deseret Book in May 2023) about 23 remarkable Latter-day Saint women called “She Did: Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Faith.” Bekki and Emily share some of their own stories (education, careers) and the reasons for writing this book—which highlights the stories of 23 women. Most of these women are largely unknown to a broad Latter-say Saint audience—but typify the faithfulness of millions of Latter-day Saint women. Hearing their stories helps us develop courage and faith—and better vision to write our own stories. A few of the woman may be familiar to readers such as Aurelia Spencer Rogers (founded the Primary program); Irene Corbett (died on the Titanic, and subject of Elder Cook’s “The Songs They Could Not Sign 2011 Conference Talk); and Chieko Okazaki (former Relief Society General Presidency). The book shares more about these remarkable women including interviews with surviving family members. I encourage everyone (men and women) to read this book and share it with others. It helps give vision—especially to younger Latter-day Saints—on ways to serve and bless others. Thank you, Bekki and Emily, for being on the podcast and writing this book. share their stories on this platform. And sometimes we have LDS authors on the platform and we have

0:28.9

two LDS authors that have come together to write a book. Emily Cushing and Becky Hood, welcome to the

0:37.1

podcast.

Before we went live, I learned that we're going to learn about the founder of the primary.

1:08.1

I've always heard that a woman started the primary program

1:11.7

in the church, and it started at a local level, and it was adopted churchwide. And listeners,

1:16.3

I think I've thought that's factual, but I think we'll learn in this podcast a true story.

1:21.5

I think it's a Paul Harvey that used to say the rest of the story. We're also going to learn

1:25.6

about a woman who died on the Titanic. Elder Cook

1:29.6

talked about her a long time ago in a conference talk, songs unsung, and I've thought about

1:36.5

that woman, and I've forgotten the backstory, and we're going to hear more about her. But that's

1:41.0

just a couple of the 23 women. And I think these kind of stories help build faith in Latter-day Saints.

1:48.9

And I hope that this book that we'll learn about is shared both in young women's and

1:54.6

young men and elders' corm and release society because I think this builds faith in men and women hearing these kinds of stories.
