Summary

300 episodes. 9 years. And for this one, we're flipping the script! Chris is hijacking the podcast and hosting, and I'm in the guest chair for the first time. This felt like the perfect way to mark a milestone of one of my favorite parts of my job. The podcast will turn nine years old this summer, and looking back at who I was when I recorded episode one versus who I am sitting here at episode 300 is… a lot. Chris asks me the questions I usually ask other people, and naturally, it gets deep fast (including some of the most honest thoughts I've probably ever shared about the fitness industry).

Here's what we get into:

  • What I believed about my purpose 9 years ago that was completely wrong, and why I'm grateful it was
  • The shadow side of being "10 toes down" and how bodybuilding taught me to recognize my edge before I fly over it
  • How I transitioned from competitor identity to high-standard lifestyle fitness (and why it took 3 full years)
  • Self-awareness: where it started, how social media criticism shaped it, and the difference between healthy self-questioning and keeping yourself small
  • In-groups and why niche communities are powerful until they forget they overlap
  • The body positivity over-correction that silenced great fat loss coaches and gave the microphone to terrible ones
  • Why fitness professionals who use fat people as clickbait are bad at marketing (and bad at their jobs)
  • The "skinny tok" trend and how over-correction in the fitness space helped it play out in our specific niche
  • Do people actually want to change, or do they want to feel like the kind of person who wants to change?
  • The "chocolate chip in the cookie of the world" and why you don't have to change the world to change lives

First and foremost: thank you. Whether you've been here since 2017 or you just found the show, thank you for making this possible. 300 episodes in nine years. I haven't been perfect, but I've been consistently consistent. And if there's one thing I can encourage you to do: if you have something you love, something you're passionate about, something you think you can make an impact doing, just go do it. It would be an insult to me and however many hours you've spent listening to this show if you didn't.
