Welcome back to the Barbell Medicine podcast. I'm Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum. Hope you had a great weekend.

0:10.8

Today, on episode 257, we're going to talk about the return to competition from one of the greatest

0:16.3

athletes in all of sports Tiger Woods. This past weekend at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas,

0:21.6

Tiger Woods returned to competitive golf for the first time in seven months. The last time Tiger

0:25.8

teated up professionally was on day three of the Masters held in early April, which Tiger

0:30.2

Woods withdraw from after round three due to foot pain. The 47-year-old took to Twitter to tell

0:34.4

his fans after withdrawing. I am disappointed to have to withdraw this morning due to re-aggravating

0:39.1

my Plantar Feshitis. Thank you to the fans and to the Masters who have shown me so much love and

0:43.8

support. Good luck to the players today. Now, Plantar Feshitis is a condition that typically causes

0:49.0

pain with walking, most commonly at the base of the heel. This is especially true after prolonged

periods of inactivity. A typical experience is significant pain upon the first few steps after

0:58.3

getting out of bed in the morning, followed by a gradual improvement with movement throughout the

1:02.0

day. This pain affects the bottom of the foot, known as the Plantar side, and specifically involves

1:07.3

a sheet of connective tissue running along the length of the foot known as the Plantar Feshia.

1:11.5

Feshitis implies an inflammatory problem whereas faciopathy encompasses a broader set of contributors

1:16.9

to pain in this area. While Tiger tweeted that he had Plantar Feshitis, less than two weeks later,

1:22.0

he actually underwent effusion of the subtailer joint. While I'm familiar with the anatomy itself,

1:26.5

I give a Masters in Anatomy, I've never performed the procedure or cared for an individual who

1:31.0

recently underwent the surgery. So, in preparation for this podcast, I reached out to a few orthopedic

1:35.6

surgeon friends of mine to talk about the procedure. So, the subtailer joint is located just below

1:40.9

the ankle in the rear of the foot, also known as the hind foot. The more familiar ankle joint is

1:45.3

created by the bottom of the tibia and fibula, and their articulation with the tail of the
