Summary

Last week I was asked this question in my email:

'Hi Emma!! I hope you’ve been well!

Weird question for you. I hear all the time from weight loss/fitness coaches that just because the scale goes up a pound, doesn’t mean you’ve gained fat. Because you’d “have to be eating 3500 calories OVER your maintenance”…

But what is happening in the body then when the scale does creep up and doesn’t go back down? No way am I ever eating that many more calories above my maintenance over one, two or even three days. But “weight creep” still happens. And I’m sure that’s how it happens for everyone, right?!

Is it just because you aren’t building or maintaining enough muscle or something?

It’s the one piece of weight gain logic that really confuses me and I feel like I’m experiencing it currently. I’m thinking of trying the commit to 6 to get back into the right mindset around this whole thing.'

Hello and welcome to this episode of the ESG Fitness podcast. Today I'm going to base this whole

episode off probably just a stream of consciousness, consciousness, thoughts around an email that I got

0:14.0

and the title of the email was, weird question, which obviously intrigued me. So the email says,

0:19.7

Hi Emma, I hope that you've been well.

0:22.9

Weird question for you. I hear all of the time from weight loss slash fitness coaches that just

0:28.0

because the scale's gone up by about a pound, that doesn't mean you've gained fat, because you'd

0:33.7

have to have eaten 3,500 calories over your maintenance in order for that to be fat.

0:39.6

Pretty sure I say that all the time.

0:41.8

But what is happening in the body when the scale does creep up and it doesn't go back down?

0:49.7

No way am I overeating that many more calories above my maintenance over one, two or even three

0:56.2

days.

0:56.8

But the quote-unquote weight creep still happens.

1:00.4

And I'm sure that's how it happens for everybody, right?

1:04.5

Question mark.

1:06.6

Is it just because you aren't building or maintaining enough muscle or is it something else?

1:11.9

It's the one piece of weight gain logic that really confuses me, and I feel like I'm experiencing it currently.

1:18.5

I'm thinking of trying the commit to six to get back into the right mindset around this whole thing.

1:23.1

I mean, highly recommend.

1:25.3

That would be a great idea.

1:30.1

But I will also give you this full podcast episode to help you. So there's a couple of things here. One of them that is that if this is quite acute,

1:37.4

I'm willing to bet that it's related to hormonal fluctuations. And I think some people forget, or maybe just don't know,

1:47.1

that there are usually two slight peaks in weight, one kind of middle of your cycle and one
