I've clearly been watching way too much Golden Girls.

But seriously, picture this. You've got a new job, or maybe if you're self-employed, you've got a new deal, a new client, a collaboration.

You're entering into working with or for someone.

Imagine though that you start this work thinking that you're just so grateful that they gave you it.

Not because you appreciate them seeing the value

in the resources, intellect, expertise, efforts, labor, talent, and creativity that you are exchanging

for money and other benefits, but because you're grateful to have a job or the opportunity full stop, you feel as if

they've taken a punt on you, you know, they've taken a gamble on you and that they could maybe should have given the opportunity to somebody else.

Well in this situation you'd feel like you owe them and if they didn't wind up valuing you, treating you right,

you wouldn't feel as if you could say or do anything about it. You wouldn't feel as if you could leave.

Or imagine that after the initial high of getting the job, opportunity that you're like Jesus are they

crazy to have hired me are they crazy to have decided to work with me? Like, what the hell are they thinking?

I'm over my head here.

I don't think I can do this.
