Summary

In part one of this new series, Pete explores the first and most important characteristic of a church culture that deeply changes lives – a slowed down spirituality. This is a church culture where people refuse to allow a hurried world to set the pace for their lives but instead live by rhythms that are slower and more deliberate. They set aside time each day to immerse themselves in Scripture, silence, and solitude, which are foundational practices for their communion with Jesus.

Hi, my name is Pete Scazzaro. I want to welcome you today to the emotionally healthy leader

0:06.8

podcast. It's so great to be with you. I've been actually on a hiatus the last few weeks,

0:12.8

visiting one of my four daughters in Perth, Australia. It was an amazing time. It actually gave me a

0:19.2

wonderful time to reflect and be and have a, in a sense, a

0:24.2

longer sabbatical. So today I want to launch out on a series, and today's topic is six

0:31.3

marks of a church culture that deeply changes lives. Six marks of a church culture that

0:36.2

deeply changes lives. And I'm going to call

0:38.5

today simply part one. Now, God always intended that the church as a culture would be radically

0:44.1

different than the world around us. But sadly, that's not the reality for most of our churches.

0:50.2

And so what I'm going to share with you today is actually a cultural vision of the church.

0:55.0

It's the fruit of years of thought and pondering probably well over a decade ago.

1:01.0

I was asked, what does it look like for a church to be emotionally healthy?

1:06.0

And I did a first draft for a ministry and refined it and put a lot of work into it and thought

1:12.8

into it. And I remember giving it to this ministry and organization. The problem was they wanted

1:18.4

it to be scalable and reproduced in churches within a one to two year period. And that was where

1:24.7

the whole thing broke down because culture is built very slowly.

1:29.3

Change happens very slowly.

1:31.0

But it did give me the framework then, which I've worked on it since, over the years.

1:36.4

And actually, we actually now put it into an e-book, which I'll encourage you to download a couple of times.
