Summary

Developed by Harvard psychiatrist and researcher, Dr. Chris Palmer, the brain energy theory of mental illness highlights the connection between mental health and metabolism. Its basis is that mental disorders are actually metabolic disorders of the brain. This new understanding opens the door to new, safer treatments for depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. Hear how Dr. Palmer has put his theory into action for his psychiatric patients and what dietary and lifestyle changes you can make to improve your mood, energy, and quality of life.

without first speaking with your doctor. Now, let's head to the show. Hey guys, today I spoke with Dr. Chris

0:46.3

Palmer on his brain theory of aging, which very nicely maps onto and correlates with the way that we often recommend looking at an individual

and helping them determine where is their low-hanging fruit to explore, to optimize their health.

1:05.4

So we'll further this discussion with Dr. Chris Palmer here at a moment, but he is really trying to champion this hypothesis that brain disorders, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, maybe even a lack of mental energy.

1:26.5

They really come down to this underlying metabolic theory

1:31.4

and maybe even a level deeper than that would be mitochondria.

1:37.9

And so we go into many of the facets that can improve or optimize brain energy, brain mitochondrial function,

1:50.0

and how this correlates with depression and what can be done about it.

1:57.5

Now, we make our way through diet, inflammation, trauma, substance abuse, or

2:05.1

overuse, stress, we hit on zone two exercise.

2:11.0

We get in this nice, bit of a tangent, I suppose, on metformin.

2:16.0

And you may have heard that metformin can extend,

2:21.4

or at least it's purported, to potentially be able to extend longevity, partially through mTOR inhibition.

2:28.1

But there might be more to this story than you've been told or we've been told. And so we had a really, I think,

2:36.9

productive sort of sidebar conversation on what medications damage mitochondria, one of which is

2:47.5

metformin and why we should perhaps be rethinking metformin for longevity

2:53.1

other than, let's say, in a diabetic population that truly needs the metformin.
