Summary

When today’s guest, Katharine DeShaw, found out her beloved yoga studio, Center for Yoga in Los Angeles, was closing she took matters into her own hands.

Katharine, who is a consultant in philanthropy and nonprofit management, went to work making phone calls to raise community support and funds to allow Center for Yoga to open its doors again.

It's an inspiring story of how the yoga community came together to keep this iconic space -- which had been in business since the 1960s -- open and thriving despite continuing challenges of re-opening during a global pandemic.

So rest assured that all of those important achievements that I just rattled off about Catherine

are very important to the telling of her story today. Catherine is based in Los Angeles

and is an avid yoga student, has been for 20 years. So three times a week without fail,

1:21.7

It was founded in the 60s, originally by Gongo White and then it was later purchased by Yoga Works

1:29.5

and has just been a thriving center on a small block in Los Angeles that has a lot of

1:34.8

local businesses and a lot of flavor. When lockdown started in 2020, the Center for Yoga

1:40.5

took their classes online and then eventually Yoga Works decided to close the studio.

1:46.3

This is when Catherine felt and I will let her tell the story in the interview,

1:51.3

but she felt a call to do something. So she gathered a team of people together

1:57.1

and renegotiated the lease, found a team of investors and reopened the Center for Yoga,

2:04.0

which is now majority female owned. So this story is just beautiful and inspiring. I think it's

2:09.8

something that we all need right now, which is to hear that we can come back, we will come back
