Summary

Stefan Molyneux digs into the uneven terrain of modern dating, pointing out how women's rising expectations clash with men's sense of not measuring up. He traces how dating has changed over time, from close-knit pairings in small villages to the more detached, app-driven scene today. Drawing on biology and the effects of endless options, he explains how age and social shifts affect people's worth in the relationship market. Molyneux looks at the hurdles women encounter as these values change, along with the mental toll it takes. He wraps up by encouraging people to talk openly about how social norms, personal goals, and biology all mix in today's dating world.

So here's a question or, I suppose, a series of observations around dating.

0:24.0

I'm really quite fascinated about sort of the modern dating market. So trying to understand

0:29.6

why it's become so asymmetrical. Why is it that women have become so picky? Why is it

0:36.1

that men have become quite bitter? And women have become bitter as well

0:39.1

because they can't find suitable partners. Men can't find suitable partners. So what I want to do, of course,

0:46.3

is I want to go into the backdrop or the backstory of how dating evolved in society. Dating is kind of a modern thing as a whole, where you just

0:56.9

go on a couple of dates, see if you like each other, maybe you become boyfriend girlfriend,

1:00.1

maybe this goes on for years, maybe you get married, and so on. We're really not designed for any of that,

1:05.3

as I'm sure you're aware. We're not designed to choose our own partners from a kind of void of knowledge, right?

1:16.9

That's not really a thing that we are designed for.

1:20.4

So the way that it worked in your village or your tribe or your farm or whatever,

1:26.2

your little community is that you would know the girl, you'd

1:32.8

grow up with the girl, you'd know her well, you'd know her family, and there wouldn't be much

1:38.4

guesstimating. There wouldn't be much guesswork in who it is you're going to marry.

1:50.2

And this is why there's a particular ring to the phrase, you know, we were high school sweethearts, right?

1:51.1

We were high school sweethearts.
