Summary

When we discuss obesity and being overweight, it often comes around to genetics and whether or not somebody is 'just naturally' heavier, and after some interesting news stories in the media recently, we wanted to explore this idea, starting with the theory that we all have a genetic set point our bodies naturally want to sit at. Is your weight nature, or nurture, and if it’s a combination, what has the biggest impact, and most importantly, how do we set ourselves up for weight management success?

Hi everyone, Ben Cooper Radio. I went to start to speak, but on Zoom now you've got this

0:11.6

woman that goes this meaning to be recorded and she threw me off my game. So thank you,

0:16.1

Mrs. Zoom. Hello everyone. I hope you have an awesome day. I think we are going to have

0:20.7

a conversation today that pretty much everyone in the world is going to enjoy and get something

0:28.4

from. Now I know we've talked a lot in the past about weight loss and weight and just sort of

0:35.1

body composition, losing it, maintaining it, gaining it. We've never really looked about the kind

0:41.3

of science and then the mindset around what we coin maintenance and what the body is trying to

0:49.1

do potentially with regulating weight. And the reason why I think this conversation is important

0:55.1

and I think we'll sort of address one topic and then potentially move on to a part two is that

1:00.4

firstly a huge amount of people, especially that are older, are in a place where they feel that

1:08.4

their weight's got a certain point and they can't get it down again. You know, let's just take

1:12.9

anyone. They used to be 65 kilos when they were younger and now they're 90 kilos and it's like,

1:18.2

oh, you know, I just can't get below 85 kilos. It's almost like my body is willing me to stay at 85

1:24.9

kilos and I've almost given up hope that this person's only, you know, 38 and hope, you know,

1:31.3

should be there. And then we've potentially got a second group of people in this conversation which

1:36.6

is more the fitness-minded folk and when I say fitness-minded, people that are really concerned

1:42.4

about their fitness and their body composition kind of like every day. And we're kind of looking at

1:47.1

maintenance as a different thing that maintenance is something that we're really trying to hold onto

1:53.7

potentially at a certain level of leanness because anyone that has got fairly lean would probably

2:00.1

tell you, I quite enjoyed being fairly lean, but actually maintaining that is a bit of work,

2:05.4

so I've kind of settled sort of around this. So, um, of course, to navigate this conversation

2:10.6

around weight, set point and our physiology, Tom, is joining me, right, Tom? Yeah, Ben, how you going?
