This is John Batchel, a conversation with my colleague Charles Burton of Synopsis. He's in Ottawa,

about the meeting between Mr. Carney and Mr. Xi at the recent APEC conference in Seoul, South Korea,

about resuming and enhancing trade between Canada and China. One of the concerns was E.Bs.

The overcapacity of the factory floor in China leaves EVs in the thousands,

and they're looking to sell them into Canada and Europe and other nations

that don't especially want a listening post wired into state security

and overwhelming the domestic car industry.

Charles reasons that the Canadian negotiators are looking for the best case scenario.

Yes, and I think that these talks will likely result in positive resolution.

The Canadians have the idea that they could get the Chinese to manufacture EVs in Canada,

similar to the manufacture of Japanese cars in Canada, and this would compensate

for Mr. Trump's desire to resure auto manufacturing into the United States and auto manufacturers

in Canada who have been canceling future plans for manufacture in Canadian facilities and laying

off large numbers of workers.

I am skeptical that China would see it a good idea to be manufacturing EVs in Canada

when they're trying to engender employment and export of excess productivity to production to foreign

countries. But that seems to be the

assumption that Canada is making. Like a lot of things, the Canadian government is probably

ill-advised and well behind the curve on what's really going on between Canada and other nations.
