Summary

In this Greatest Hits episode, we’re diving into the science behind why coaching works—and why it can completely transform high-pressure careers. I’m revisiting my conversation with Dr. Tyra Fainstad and Dr. Adrienne Mann about their groundbreaking research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and how structured coaching can change not just individual outcomes, but entire organizational cultures.

Tune in to discover what their study revealed about coaching’s real-world impact, why traditional systems often leave women disproportionately stressed, and how coaching can produce measurable improvements in both performance and well-being.

Hello, my friends. So one of the stories that you've probably heard me tell, possibly before,

0:05.4

about when I first became a coach, was the moment that one of my relatives said to me,

0:11.7

well, what you're talking about isn't empirically validated or studied, right? It's just self-reported.

0:18.4

And at the time, even before I had a scientific study that included my work,

0:23.4

which, spoiler alert, I'll get to in this episode, I knew there was something off about that because,

0:29.1

first of all, women and other marginalized people have always had to self-report on what helps us

0:34.4

because we're not generally, included in studies and our specific

0:39.7

concerns have not been considered so relevant, right? Just go look at the funding gap between

0:44.6

diseases that impact only women versus only men. We could get into the whole history of

0:49.2

the unequal and uneven treatment of women and other marginalized communities in medical studies,

0:55.1

scientific studies, whatever. But it was still a delicious moment and very validating a couple of

1:01.2

years ago when I was part of a peer-reviewed, double-blind scientific study that studied

1:08.1

the impacts of the kind of coaching I do, and specifically the coaching I do,

1:11.7

along with some other folks. But my teaching, like written curriculum, interactive, you know,

1:17.6

exercises, live coaching, audio teaching, all of that was part of the study. And so in this

1:23.2

episode, which is one of our greatest hits, I have a conversation with the authors of that

1:26.9

study.

1:34.1

And I think it's just a great listen for anyone who either is a coach and wants to feel more confident that what they're doing, assuming you're doing the kind of coaching that I teach is

1:39.0

scientifically validated, people who just want to feel more kind of sure that what I'm teaching on the podcast comes

1:45.7

from somewhere, has that backing and that proof, right, who wants to be able to explain to friends

1:50.7

or family potentially, like why they're so interested in coaching, whether that's just as

1:54.9

the client or if you want to be a coach. It's just a great reminder that we know what we're
