Summary

Marriage coach Monica Tanner joins Ali to challenge the unwritten rulebook most of us absorbed about relationships without ever questioning it. Monica, the author of Bad Marriage Advice, breaks down why a lot of the advice well-meaning people pass down is not just unhelpful but actively working against us. The conversation covers why "never go to bed angry" is a recipe for sleep deprivation, what it actually means to teach your partner how to treat you, and why compromise is not always the goal. Ali also shares her own examples from her relationship with Skyline.

In Updates, Ali reflects on her ongoing curly hair journey and an unexpected emotional realization it triggered, shares a story about a college situationship she had completely forgotten about, and celebrates two years with Skyline, including a special anniversary dinner.

This week's Media Mention is "4 Styles of Cleaners" by Amanda Dodson (@nestingyourlife on TikTok), a framework for understanding where you and your partner fall on the tidy/cluttered and sanitized/natural spectrums, and why it matters more than you think for cohabitation.

Before we get into updates, this week's guest is Monica Tanner. I absolutely loved my

1:01.2

conversation with her. She is a marriage coat and she is the author of a book called

1:05.1

Bad Marriage Advice, which I found out on our recording, the background of, which I didn't

1:09.5

realize, was that she was

1:11.3

writing a letter to her son when he told her that he was ready to get married, or getting

1:17.8

married. And she was telling him all of the advice that she had and mostly like debunking

1:23.7

advice that other people have. And that was sort of the basis of the book. It turned into this

1:29.6

whole thing where she talks about relationship myths that very well-meaning people are passing

down like their gospel. And we go through a bunch of them in this episode, give our thoughts and,
