Summary

There is a difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance.

You might have unidentified food intolerances that are impacting your health and your progress towards your goals and not even know it!

And, just because you've tolerated a food before doesn't mean you do now.

Plus, you can overcome your food intolerances!

If you continue to consume a food to which you are even mildly intolerant, you are initiating a domino effect of challenges within your body.

In today's episode I'm talking about the direct connection between food intolerances, your immune system, your fat loss & your health. I'm sharing the impact of genetics, lifestyle and diet on your immune system and what happens when your immune system is compromised.

In part 2, I'll share common foods that trigger an immune response and might be responsible for your symptoms and how you can strengthen your immune system & eliminate your symptoms.

Don't miss the full episode! It's a really important one!

Are Food Intolerances Slowing Your Progress?

To answer this question, we first need to understand the role of the immune system, as food intolerances are based on your immune system's response to food.

Your immune system's primary function is to protect you from toxins, pathogens and other threats.

Because most threats to your health are introduced to your body through your mouth (what we eat, drink or inhale), the majority of your immune system resides in your gastrointestinal tract.

The immune role in the GI tract is to keep out anything and everything that could be dangerous.

Unfortunately, when we knowing or unknowingly consume foods to which we're even mildly intolerant, we break down the protective barrier within the GI tract and create larger problems.

What are the symptoms of a food intolerance or autoimmune issue?

There are so many possible symptoms but the common ones include:

  • bloating
  • gas
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • headaches
  • rashes & other skin conditions
  • acne
  • trouble sleeping
  • low energy
  • indigestion
  • allergies
  • depression
  • irritability
  • joint pain
  • slow healing

When we fail to eliminate these food allergens and other immune irritants, our immune system becomes compromised and attacks things it shouldn't, including foods and our own body tissues.

This leads to new food allergies or autoimmune diseases like hashimotos thyroiditis, lupus and arthritis.

The most common autoimmune diseases include:

  • psoriasis
  • fibromyalgia
  • lupus
  • celiac disease
  • hashimotos thyroiditism
  • rheumatoid arthritis

In today's episode I'm talking about how your body's inflammatory response works, what happens when common foods trigger inflammation and how we can quiet the inflammation throughout the body and eliminate your symptoms.

I'll also share one of the primary challenges with convention prescription drug treatments for these autoimmune concerns.

In the next episode I'll be talking about which foods most frequently trigger this immune response and how we can calm our inflammatory response, heal the immune system and eliminate food intolerances. We'll closely examine foods including:

  • sugar
  • caffeine
  • gluten
  • dairy
  • nuts/seeds
  • alcohol

This is Primal Potential and I am your host, Elizabeth Benton. Through education, motivation, and implementation, we will bridge the gap between knowing and doing so we can master fat loss naturally and help you reach your highest potential. Let's get started.

0:54.0

Hello everybody and welcome back to the Primal Potential Podcast. I am Elizabeth Benton and we have what I think is going to be a really strong and powerful new series.

1:07.0

It's probably going to be a two-parter, maybe even a three-parter, not sure yet. And you can probably hear the rumble of my dryer in the background.

1:16.0

I try not to record when the dryer is going but today it has to happen. So if you hear that humming, sorry about it, gotta do laundry. You know what I mean? It's this yoga challenge man, I'm telling you I have to wash the towel every single day.

1:30.0

So more laundry happening over here than ever before probably. But anyway, here's where we're going in the next couple or few episodes.

1:39.0

Just a couple weeks ago, I shared two episodes on thyroid health. I shared that I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and some other hormonal issues that are more linked to chronic and systemic inflammation.

1:54.0

And I shared that many thyroid issues are actually autoimmune issues first that turn into thyroid issues and we tend to focus in many cases, not just with thyroid health in many cases.

2:08.0

We tend to focus on the downstream impact without first looking at, hey, what's going on with the immune system and how do we strengthen that?

2:20.0

Because it's not just about the thyroid, although yeah, when the immune system is impaired and it turns on the thyroid, we have a problem.

2:28.0

But that happens with our joints. It happens throughout the body, not just in the thyroid. There are a million other ways that this can manifest.

2:37.0

So I want to spend the next couple or few episodes talking about the link between our immune system and the foods we eat.

2:47.0

How the foods we eat can either keep our immune system strong so that we don't ever have these downstream problems or so that we can overcome these downstream problems.

2:59.0

Right? I want to talk about food intolerances. How to know if you have them? If you have an allergy, chances are you know.

3:06.0

But if you have an intolerance, you probably don't know. I didn't know. When we consume foods or toxins to which our body mounts a defense, even if it's not a strong defense like we see in somebody who goes into anaphylactic shock or breaks out in hives when they consume something that they're sensitive to, these little things that we don't even know that we take as normal, the bloating, the acne, the joint pain.

3:35.0

We think it's just kind of the way we've always been. No, it's our immune system mounting a response against a trigger. And that can and will lead to issues down the road.

3:48.0

So there are lots of autoimmune issues that things that stem from consuming food, drink, toxins, consuming anything that aggravates your immune system. And these aggravating factors are going to be different for all of us, but are responsible for symptoms like food allergies or arthritis headaches, asthma, eczema, acne.

4:14.0

And it can go further into true disease, whether that's heart disease, whether that's arthritis, whether it's cancer, whether it's a thyroid disease or lupus. All of these things can, not always, but can be triggered by repeated exposure to something that we don't even know is a problem.

4:37.0

We must heal and strengthen the immune system. There is so much we can do. Oftentimes we think that these are just things that happen to us either because of our genetics or because of something beyond our control. And while sure, there are always factors beyond our control.

4:54.0

What I want to do is really introduce you to so many of the factors that are within our control that we are not taking advantage of. There is so much that you can do. And I'm not suggesting that it's easy, but we can absolutely without question make meaningful changes and feel better, no matter what's going on in a fairly short period of time.
