Filmmaking can be an incredibly complicated undertaking,

with hundreds or even thousands of moving parts to coordinate.

Film productions have had to build roads,

invent new technologies, feed, transport, and house thousands of crew

members and sometimes even push the boundaries of safety with death-divine stunt work.

It takes tremendous talent, discipline, and hard work to manage that kind of complexity.

But sometimes, the most challenging kind of filmmaking isn't adding complexity, but rather stripping

it away. No spectacle to hide behind, no special effects or mind-boggling

action sequences. Nothing left to work with but the bare essentials, the words, the actors, and the camera to film them.

Twelve Angry Men is just such a movie.

A story that plays out in one room and in real time, flawlessly captured by the first-time director Sidney Lomette.

Twelve Angry Men is a master class in acting with Henry Fonda and one of the greatest ensembles

in the history of cinema.

Lomette brings us in close as 12 jurors wrestle with each other, their preconceptions, and even the darkness

within their own souls.

It's a remarkable film, and one of John's all-time favorites.

Collection. So that's the Deceptively Simple 12 Angry men this Friday on the cinephiles.
