Hi this is Steve. Our goal on the Synophiles has always been to discuss films from every era and genre.

However, even a cursory glance at our long list of episodes reveals just how poorly we've really done. I mean, we've only done one

documentary, two foreign films. Only one kind of silent film, Charlie

Chaplin's Modern Times, only one horror film, well two if you count Silence of the Lambs.

I mean we still haven't done Hitchcock.

You probably don't believe us, but John and I both love Hitchcock.

We also can't wait to talk about Bergman, Gedard, Sergio Leone, John Houston, Howard Hawks,

Altman, Spike Lee, Ang Lee, Terence Malik, and a whole bunch of other guys I'm probably forgetting

to mention here.

But did you notice anything interesting about that long list of directors

I just mentioned, or how I said there was a whole bunch of other guys

I was probably forgetting?

A whole bunch of other guys. Are you getting it yet? I am horribly

embarrassed to admit that in over two years of the Cinephiles we have never

discussed a film directed by a woman.

That's over a hundred movies, all of them directed by men.

Now you can come to any conclusions you want about what that omission says about the

cinnophiles, or perhaps more importantly what it says about the

omission says about the cinnophiles or perhaps more importantly what it says about the film

industry as a whole but John and I both think it's time to change that

so this Friday the cinnophiles will be digging in to Penny Marshall's 1992 baseball comedy, A League of

Their Own.
