The girl, dressed in a pretty pink dress, poses for a photograph sat on the knee of a young man, smartly dressed in a tuxedo. They could be any young couple, but are not, for whilst she smiles broadly, he cannot, through pain, and inability. She then approaches the young man in the tuxedo, and brandishing a knife, proceeds to mutilate his chest with it, carving her initials into him. She then approaches him with a cellar of salt, and his terrified eyes widen as she pours it into the wound…. Sounds like a bad movie? It is, it’s a scene from a 2009 Australian horror movie called The Loved Ones – except that in 2012, in the English city of Chester, someone thought life should imitate art…. Have you ever had someone you’ve fallen for so much that you would want to do ANYTHING to impress them, to give them the world? How about, pretending to be something, someone that you aren’t then, where you back up the most lavish of stories with a once in a lifetime event? For one 18 year old Merseyside student back in 2004, she was to get this – though in her worst nightmares she couldn’t have imagined exactly how she was to – and the lengths that her suitor had gone to to give it her. On a cold spring day in May 1982, two friends, Ann Lee and Margaret Johnson, set off for what would be their final dogwalk together around a familiar area of common land to them in the town of Aldershot, in Hampshire. Their final walk, because during it, Ann and Margaret met a crazed killer. Yet, within hours of the murder, had their killer called police and given his name and address? The new red bicycle had fast become her pride and joy, all of her friends had seen it, and one sunny afternoon in August 1981, nine year old Jennifer Cardy set off from her home in Ballinderry to cycle the short distance to show the first friend she had it again, so excited was she. As a small Datsun van passed her as she did, Jennifer had no idea that a predator, a monster, was waiting for her. It was a simple, quick detour to avoid prying eyes - and it was fortunate that it was just that too, a quick detour, for if it wasn't, then perhaps Teresa Thornhill wouldn't be here today. That evening in Nottingham in April 1988, she very certainly only narrowly escaped the clutches of death, thanks in part to the survivor she was. Because she was the survivor, her evidence would later be crucial in bringing to a very definite end the reign of arguably, Britain's most prolific child killer. This is Teresa's story. Pilot, Cruise Ship Captain, successful businessman, gifted salesman, entrepreneur, property renovator, heir to a massive fortune, able to drop claims of rubbing shoulders with political figures, all whilst living a champagne lifestyle. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it? This time around on The True Crime Enthusiast Podcast, we meet an individual who was all that and more. On paper, and according to him, anyway - but one who left a costly trail of devestation in his wake. Rememberance Day - a day where we should each give thanks, respect and thoughts to those who through their sacrifices are why we have the freedoms we do today. To be proud. The countless former and serving members of the Armed Forces who each display the medals that they have earned do so with this in abundance, recognition of such sacrifices and bravery they have each earned. And yet, there are many people who also do this - but without the commitment, hard work and bravery that it takes to do so, they simply embellish or even act out a fantasy, basking in glory that they have not attained - as you shall come to see here. I used to watch a great sci-fi show back in the 90's called The Pretender, about a genius who could become anything he wanted to be, fit into any walk of life, which he used to do to help people. The people we will meet this time around on The True Crime Enthusiast Podcast are in no way geniuses though - for some people don't let trivialities such as qualifications or aptitude get in their way - and instead, rely on a bit of shopping, the gift of the gab, and more front than Brighton to get by. For this time around, we look at some of those pretending to be THIS side of the law. Evil, once it is inside a person, never really goes away - it may remain dormant for many years, but it is always there. There are countless memorials to the brave personnel of the Armed Forces scattered around the UK, but one of these, in Surrey, contains the names of several service personnel whose military service is overshadowed by one thing - the execution each faced for the heinous crimes they committed, not as an act of war, but as a case of murder. Concluding the horrifying and tragic story of 10 year old Ursula Herrmann this time around on The True Crime Enthusiast Podcast, the girl snatched whilst cycling home in Germany in 1981, only to be found 17 days later in the most nightmarish of circumstances. Though it was to take almost 27 years, in 2008 the wheels of justice finally began to turn for Ursula and her family. Hitchhiking brings with it countless dangers, as we have seen on screen countless times and with the exploits of killers such as the West's, but for many years it was a commonplace thing to do, the dangers not thought about, merely the destination. In the winter of 1995, one such hitcher, a 19 year old French student named Celine Figard, accepted a ride that she was sadly, never to finish. Her last ride. Back in 1983, 14 year old Gillian Atkins had one love in her life - her horses, she was horse mad from a young age. We head back to 2005, and to the town of St Austell in the beautiful UK county of Cornwall this time around on The True Crime Enthusiast Podcast, for a disturbing tale that shows just how perverse and barbaric the actions of some are, how they prey upon and use the vulnerable for their own means, even those who have next to nothing. The loss of a child must be heartbreaking, devastating, surreal all at once - how can you even begin to define it? One morning back in November 2007, it was a nightmare that North Wales father Simon Hill was thrust into - but for Simon, there was an extra dimension to such a tragedy. For it was at the hands of his equal - the person supposed to love and protect a child more than anyone.
