In this episode of Ten Minute Tuesday, the guys take a deep dive into the fascinating history of Herter’s—the legendary catalog company that helped shape Midwest hunting culture for generations. Long before online shopping, big-box outdoor retailers, and social media influencers, hunters eagerly waited for the annual Herter’s catalog to arrive in the mail, packed with everything from duck decoys and calls to boats, waders, and hunting camp essentials.  The episode explores the story of founder George Leonard Herter, whose larger-than-life marketing style turned a small Minnesota sporting goods business into one of the most influential hunting brands in America. From the famous “Model Perfect” slogan and outrageous product claims to the rise of Herter’s decoys, boats, and hunting gear, the guys break down how the company changed waterfowl hunting forever and became a cornerstone of Midwest outdoor culture.  They also discuss the lasting legacy of Herter’s, why old catalogs have become collector’s items, and how many of the marketing tactics and gear debates hunters see today trace their roots back to the original hunting empire built in Waseca, Minnesota.  If you love waterfowl history, vintage hunting gear, and the stories behind the brands that shaped the sport, this is an episode you won’t want to miss. This week on Sports Guyz Only, the crew dives headfirst into playoff season as hockey heartbreak and NBA drama take center stage. The guys break down what went wrong for the Colorado Avalanche, whether the Minnesota Wild are actually closer to contention than people think, and what moves need to happen this offseason to finally bring a Stanley Cup to Minnesota.  On the hardwood, the conversation gets heated as the Knicks continue their surprising playoff run, the Timberwolves face tough questions about chemistry and leadership, and the crew debates whether Anthony Edwards has what it takes to become the franchise-changing superstar Minnesota desperately needs. Is Julius Randle the problem? Did the Karl-Anthony Towns trade really make sense? And how much does team chemistry matter compared to pure star power?  Plus: Why Connor McDavid’s next contract could reshape the NHL The case for blowing up parts of the Wild roster SGA’s free-throw numbers and the NBA’s flopping problem Prime Shaq vs. Jokic, Wemby, and every modern big man The value of coaches, leadership, and locker-room culture NFL arrests, off-field issues, and whether teams should do more to keep players out of trouble The biggest athletes who bet on themselves—and lost  As always, it’s sports debates, questionable takes, playoff overreactions, and the kind of conversations that only happen when the Guyz get together. In this episode of the Midwest Flyways Podcast, the crew dives into everything from replica duck bands and waterfowl conservation to predator management and bizarre wildlife facts. The guys swap stories about banded birds, discuss the rising costs of replica bands for mounts and lanyards, and debate the realities of predator control for ducks, turkeys, and other nesting birds. They also break down fascinating coyote behavior, wolf population controversies, and the “circle of life” moments every outdoorsman witnesses eventually.  Of course, it wouldn’t be Midwest Flyways without plenty of off-the-rails banter — including Bad Santa discussions, James Bond debates, Patrick Star references, and Joey trying to claw his way back in the standings as the episode wraps up with another round of Say What?!, featuring record-setting ducks, mourning doves, canvasbacks, and more.  If you love hunting culture, waterfowl conservation, hilarious tangents, and hanging out with friends talking outdoors, this one’s for you. In this episode of Ten Minute Tuesday, the guys dive into the fascinating history of duck calls — from hunters using live decoy ducks and mouth calling in the 1800s to the rise of legendary call makers like P.S. Olt, Victor Glodo, Chick Major, and Phil Robertson. They break down how early mechanical calls changed waterfowl hunting forever, the origins of competitive duck calling in Stuttgart, Arkansas, and how modern duck calls evolved into both hunting tools and pieces of personal identity for hunters everywhere.  The episode also explores the split between contest calling and real-world hunting calling, the impact duck calls have had on hunting pressure over the decades, and why understanding the history behind the calls hanging on your lanyard matters. If you’re a duck hunter, call collector, or just love waterfowl history, this one is packed with stories, trivia, and insight into one of hunting’s most iconic tools.  Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review!  Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! This week on Sports Guyz Only, the boys are back in the studio — bruised, injured, and talking reckless. What starts as a backyard foot race quickly turns into accusations of false starts, torn plantar fascia, and one of the most heated “who’s actually faster?” debates in podcast history.  After the chaos settles down, the crew dives deep into the NBA playoffs, breaking down the Timberwolves’ collapse, Julius Randle frustrations, Anthony Edwards’ future, and whether a Giannis trade could actually happen. They also debate Victor Wembanyama’s unreal potential, the dominance of prime Shaq, and build some wild all-time NBA 3-on-3 matchups featuring LeBron, Kobe, KD, Steph, T-Mac, and more.  Plus: Why Minnesota sports fans are emotionally broken The pain of Vikings playoff history Could Philly survive a Flyers championship? On this episode of the Midwest Flyways Podcast, the boys kick things off by talking about YouTube cracking down on hunting content and why building the Hunt Club community has become more important than ever for duck and goose hunters who just want authentic, uncensored content. From there, the conversation goes completely off the rails—in the best possible way.  The crew dives into old-school hunting shows, Game of Thrones and Yellowstone hot takes, hilarious Eric Andre clips, turkey hunting stories, Appalachian cryptids, Skinwalker Ranch, duck hunting in the Middle East, and the rising cost of hunting gear and diesel. As always, the episode is packed with the kind of random rabbit holes, trash talk, and hunting camp humor that Midwest Flyways listeners know and love.  To wrap things up, the guys battle it out in another round of “Say What?” featuring wild waterfowl facts, bird trivia, and some seriously questionable guessing skills.  If you’re into duck hunting, goose hunting, waterfowl culture, and unfiltered conversations with the boys, this is an episode you don’t want to miss. In this week’s Ten Minute Tuesday, we dive into the rich history of the legendary Mississippi Flyway — the river system that helped shape waterfowl hunting culture across America. From indigenous hunters navigating flooded timber in dugout canoes to the rise of market hunting, steamboat duck commerce, elite duck clubs, and the birth of iconic destinations like Stuttgart, Arkansas, this episode explores how one river became the backbone of North American duck hunting history.  We break down the incredible scale of the Mississippi Flyway, the migration patterns that still define modern hunting today, and the stories that built the traditions many waterfowlers continue to live for every fall. This is Part 1 of a two-part history series, covering the southern and central reaches of the flyway before heading north next week.  If you love waterfowl history, duck camp stories, conservation culture, and the roots of the hunt, this episode is for you.  Subscribe to The Midwest Flyways Podcast and join the Flyways Hunt Club community for more weekly episodes, stories, and conversations centered around the future and heritage of waterfowl hunting.  Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! Sports Guyz Only is back in studio and absolutely ripping through one of the wildest weeks in sports. The crew dives deep into the Wolves-Spurs playoff controversy, debating whether the NBA is protecting superstars, how sports gambling may be influencing officiating, and why fans are losing trust in pro sports. There’s also a heated breakdown of Giannis trade scenarios, Julius Randle’s playoff struggles, and bold NBA Finals predictions.  On the NHL side, the guys talk Wild playoff hockey, why depth matters more than grit in the postseason, Colorado injuries, Vegas hate, and what it would mean for Minnesota to finally bring home a Stanley Cup. Plus: Rory McIlroy catches heat for withdrawing over a blister, NFL culture gets called out again after another player arrest, and the crew debates whether LeBron should retire or chase one more ring.  As always, expect chaos, gambling degeneracy, conspiracy theories, Minnesota sports pain, and unfiltered takes from start to finish. This week on the Midwest Flyways Podcast, we sit down with our buddy Jeremy Cmiel after his very first duck hunting trip — a South Dakota waterfowl adventure that ended up becoming much more than just a hunt.  What starts as a conversation about first-time hunters, migration, and getting humbled by educated mallards slowly turns into something deeper: why experiences like this affect people so profoundly in the first place.  We talk about waking up before sunrise, laying under massive migrations of birds, hearing snow geese cut the cold air overhead, earning meals from the land, and the strange way hunting makes you notice nature everywhere you go afterward. Jeremy shares what surprised him most about waterfowl hunting — not just the shooting, but the reverence for wildlife, the connection to the outdoors, and the camaraderie that comes from chasing birds with good friends.  Along the way, we get into: • South Dakota duck camp stories• Permission hunting and meeting local farmers• Duck stroganoff that changed Jeremy’s life• Liar’s Dice marathons until 2am• And why waterfowl hunting feels different than almost anything else  At its core, this episode is about more than hunting. It’s about reconnecting with something honest, ancestral, and deeply human — the kind of experience modern life rarely gives us anymore.  Whether you’re a lifelong waterfowler or someone who’s never stepped foot in a blind, this conversation will probably make you understand why people keep coming back to the flyway year after year. The Sports Guyz are back with another chaotic, hilarious, and debate-filled episode. The crew dives deep into the NBA playoffs, breaking down the Timberwolves’ physical series, Anthony Edwards’ growth, Rudy Gobert’s defensive impact, and whether the Wolves are true contenders. They also debate Kevin Durant’s legacy, NBA superteams, and the value of draft picks across the NBA and NFL.  The conversation shifts into the NHL playoffs as the guys react to the Wild’s struggles, playoff physicality, and whether Minnesota has the depth to survive a brutal postseason run. Along the way, the crew goes off the rails discussing streaming services ruining sports viewing, billion-dollar sports franchises, horse racing predictions from the Kentucky Derby, and even the strange reality of burnt-hotdog courtroom evidence involving Stefon Diggs.  Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review! On this episode of the Midwest Flyways Podcast, Cal is joined by Carter (no Joey this week) to break down a controversial topic that’s been gaining traction—the proposed Greyhound Protection Act and its potential impact on bird dog training, live bird use, and hunting culture as a whole.  What starts as a conversation about legislation quickly turns into a deeper discussion about federal overreach, unclear laws, and how vague wording could affect hunters, dog trainers, and field trials across the country. If you run dogs, train dogs, or care about the future of hunting, this is one you need to hear.  Then… things take a turn. We introduce a brand new segment: The Flyways Department of Grievances—and the first submission might be the most unhinged hunting story we’ve ever heard. It involves a dog, a public boat ramp, and a situation that spirals completely out of control. You’ve been warned.  Topics covered: What the Greyhound Protection Act is and why it matters How it could affect bird dog training and live bird use The role of organizations like the AKC and hunting groups Animal welfare vs. hunting tradition Why clarity in legislation matters more than ever Flyways Department of Grievances (Case #1)  Don’t forget, duck hunting is still fun. There was a time when hunting required no permission. If you could reach the marsh, you could hunt it. In this episode, we explore how that changed—and why.  As waterfowl populations collapsed in the late 1800s, states began asking a new question: who owns the wildlife? What followed was the birth of the hunting license—an idea that sparked resistance, challenged tradition, and reshaped the future of hunting.  From early pushback in places like Minnesota to the enforcement era, the Lacey Act, and the rise of hunter-funded conservation, this is the story of how conflict turned into stewardship.  Because the hunting license didn’t start as conservation—it started as confrontation. And today, it represents something bigger: The shift from taking what you can… to protecting what remains.  Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review!  Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! In this episode, Cal, Joey, and Carter dive deep into waterfowl culture, breaking down the truth about goose calls, why gear matters (and when it doesn’t), and how different regions shape the way hunters hunt.  But this one goes way beyond hunting. The guys get real about chasing passions, building Midwest Flyways over the past decade, and what it actually takes to balance family, work, and an obsession with the outdoors.  From hilarious stories and industry insights to a raw conversation about dream lifestyles—owning land out west, building cabins by hand, and refusing to give up the things that make life worth living—this episode hits on what it means to build a life you’re proud of.  If you’ve ever felt the pull to hunt more, create more, or just live differently… this one’s for you. Above all, hearing about the tradition that is being preserved is what stands out to us. We also talk about hunting in general and our different experiences. In this Ten Minute Tuesday History Lesson episode, Cal traces the full evolution of the shotgun and how it shaped waterfowl hunting from the earliest days of market hunting to today.  We start in the pre-1800s era of flintlock muskets, smoothbores, and punt guns—when ducks were harvested for survival and commerce, not sport. From there, we move into the birth of the true shotgun in Europe with early innovators like Joseph Manton and Purdey, and follow its arrival in America as wingshooting begins to take form.  The episode breaks down the biggest turning points in shotgun history: the invention of the self-contained shell, the rise of breech-loading doubles, and the golden age of American makers like Parker, L.C. Smith, Ithaca, and Remington. We then explore how repeating shotguns changed everything—Winchester 1897 pump actions, Browning’s Auto-5 semi-auto revolution, and the regulatory response that followed, including the 3-shell federal limit that still shapes waterfowl hunting today.  From mid-century workhorses like the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 to the global shift brought by imports from Beretta, Browning, and more, we track how accessibility and reliability transformed the average hunter’s experience.  Finally, we land in the modern era with purpose-built waterfowl platforms like the Weatherby Sorix, advanced materials, steel and tungsten shot, and the ongoing debate that has echoed for over 150 years: how much firepower is “too much” for fair chase hunting? From black powder to precision machines—this is the story of the shotgun, and the culture of waterfowl hunting it built.  Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! This week on Sports Guyz Only, we’re lucky to be joined in studio by our good buddy Logan Webster. Logan spent 4 and a half years photographing all sorts of sporting events and media happenings from press conferences to football, basketball and you name it for the University of Arkansas. He got a good look at the grind that is collegiate athletics across the board. We hear all about his experiences behind the scenes. Then we pivot to a little of this and a little of that around the sports world. Nathaniel pretends he actually picked Rory and back to back and we all know he didn’t. Carter believes Kyler Murray is the answer to all the Vikings problems and Gavin can’t take much more of it. We wrap up with another one of Carters diabolical games set as a trap for Gavin, but things quickly derail. This week on the Midwest Flyways Podcast, Joey Vassallo and Cal Ness break down one of the biggest waterfowl conversations Minnesota has seen in years: the Minnesota Duck Summit.  Held in Nicollet near Swan Lake, the summit brought together more than 300 hunters, conservationists, biologists, and agency officials to ask a simple question: where have all the ducks gone? Joey and Cal dive into the biggest topics from the event, including declining mallard numbers, the push to reduce the hen mallard limit from two birds to one, concerns over early September seasons, hunting pressure, and whether Minnesota’s current regulations are doing more harm than good.  The guys also discuss the growing belief among hunters that ducks are being pressured off public water too early and too often. At the summit, 78% of attendees said hunting pressure is pushing ducks off public land, while 93% supported creating or expanding duck refuges. Many hunters also supported later openers, ending September duck hunting, and earlier daily closing times to give birds more rest.  Are Minnesota’s duck problems being caused by habitat loss, modern agriculture, predators, hunting pressure, or all of the above? Joey and Cal sort through the arguments, the science, and what changes could shape the future of duck hunting in Minnesota.  Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! Joey and Cal break down a couple of things each that stand out to them as significant moments where they learned something that really shifted their thinking about duck and goose hunting and how to be more successful as a hunter. In truth, the learning never stops because the birds are always changing and anything can happen tomorrow. Why did pintail limits drop… even when hunters were still seeing birds?  In this Midwest Flyways history episode, we break down one of the most debated topics in duck hunting history — the rise, fall, and ongoing management of the northern pintail. From booming populations in the 1950s to sharp declines in the 1960s and 70s, this episode dives deep into the moment when hunters and biologists collided over what was really happening.  We cover the real reasons behind pintail population declines, including Prairie Pothole Region habitat loss, agricultural expansion, and why nest success rates crashed below sustainable levels. More importantly, we explore the tension between what hunters saw in the field versus what the data showed — and why that disconnect still exists today.  This episode also explains how the pintail debate helped shape modern waterfowl management, including the development of Adaptive Harvest Management (AHM), species-specific regulations, and population-based season structures that still impact duck hunting today. If you’ve ever questioned duck limits, season changes, or how wildlife agencies make decisions — this is the episode that explains it.  Perfect for duck hunters, waterfowl enthusiasts, and anyone interested in conservation, flyway management, and the future of hunting. We recorded this episode on April Fools, and the guys kick things off the right way—by having a little fun at Nathaniel’s expense.  The episode opens with a classic setup, baiting Gavin into a passionate rant about LeBron James. Just when he’s fully bought in, the conversation flips back on him—drawing some interesting comparisons to his recent big bets. Let’s just say, not everyone saw where things were headed.  From there, it’s full March Madness chaos. Cal somehow remains the last man standing with his bracket intact, while major upsets—including Duke’s exit—continue to shake up the tournament. Looking ahead, the guys break down what’s next and make a few bold predictions, including why a potential Michigan vs. Arizona matchup might be the real national championship. Plus, a look at how teams like Illinois are building rosters with a global pipeline.  With the NBA playoffs right around the corner, the conversation shifts to who’s heating up at the right time and what storylines to watch as the postseason picture comes into focus.  To close things out, the guys highlight a powerful story from Gary Woodland, who has been open about his battle with a brain tumor and PTSD—bringing some real perspective beyond the game.  Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review!  Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! In this MWF History Lesson, we dive into the evolution of duck decoys—from the earliest hand-carved wooden blocks to today’s mass-produced plastics—and how each phase changed the way hunters approach the game. What started as simple tools rooted in Indigenous tradition grew into a craft, an industry, and eventually a collector’s market worth millions.  We break down the golden age of carving, highlight legendary makers, and explore the shift from handmade birds to factory production. Along the way, we touch on wild stories of decoys found in barns and garages that turned out to be worth small fortunes—and the reality that some of the most valuable decoys ever made were once just tools in a working spread.  At its core, this episode isn’t just about decoys—it’s about the constant evolution of waterfowl hunting, the people who shaped it, and the one thing that’s never changed: It’s not about perfection… it’s about creating confidence and fooling the bird.  Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review!  Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! It turns out Cal, our resident college basketball expert is fired, effective immediately. We relive the first weekend of tournament basketball and talk Big Ten DOMINANCE with 6 teams making the Sweet 16! Carter won’t stop talking about the 100 leg parlay that South Florida ruined for him and Gavin comes with the hottest takes ever had by mankind. This week on Ten Minute Tuesday, we dive into the history of waterfowl banding and how it transformed conservation in North America. From early pioneers like Jack Miner to the millions of ducks banded over the past century, these little bands have revealed the true story of migration, survival, and harvest. Banding turned guesswork into data—mapping flyways, shaping hunting regulations, and helping ensure sustainable waterfowl populations. Every band tells a story, and every hunter who reports one becomes part of that legacy. Thanks so much for listening and be sure to subscribe and review!  Join Flyways Hunt Club and get 1 month free! Flyways Hunt Club  This week for Ten Minute Tuesday, we’re back with another one of Cal’s history lessons. This time, we’ll be going through the lead shot ban and how that change took place over a few years. After decades of having become accustom to shooting lead and relying on the payload and consistency of lead shot, science told us a story we hadn’t really seen as hunters. This story was the reality, birds were dying because of lead poisoning. For many of us, this change happened before we started our hunting journeys and hearing about the changes we’ve come to know as standard practice are helpful to paint the broader picture of the history of waterfowl hunting! So much happening in the sports world and much of it directly involves Minnesota sports teams. We start with the bidding line for Giannis and the wolves appeared very interested in being at the front of that pack. We talk about how insane the trades are in the NBA involving draft picks and more which aligns with how ridiculous the trade offer would have to be for Giannis. Is it worth what teams would have to give up? Then, the past few weeks have been fairly interesting for lots of NFL teams as the fallout of this past season has to be answered for by front office and coaching staff members. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was not exempt from this and this past week he lost his job because Sam Darnold took the Seahawks to the Super Bowl. Well the debate heard round the waterfowl community has made its way to us. For the last couple of months you’ve probably seen all of the discussions, debates, and outright fighting regarding flooded corn and whether or not this practice should be allowed to continue. While purposefully flooding corn is not a common practice, it is in some parts of the country and there are strong opinions in the south regarding it. Joey and Cal give their thoughts about the debate and look at multiple different avenues when it comes to the lack of mallards in the south. We’re not saying we’re right or that we know everything and you may have a different opinion one way or the other.
