Summary

Your Secret to Setting Powerful Goals October 21, 2025 | Episode 5206 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Forget goal-setting frameworks and Reddit productivity lists. Scott's got a better approach, and it starts with his daughter's flooded house, $15,000 in ruined flooring, and a couple stuck in purgatory for two and a half years. This isn't your typical goal-setting episode. It's about making decisions when you're sitting on the fence getting splinters in your ass. And yes, Scott sneaks in a bagel sandwich story while his wife babysits grandchild number five. Three simple steps. One powerful mindset shift. Zero excuses. Featured Story Scott's daughter and son-in-law have been living in a construction zone for two and a half years after hurricane damage wrecked their home. Water leaking. Mold growing. Fifteen grand down the drain on flooring that failed. But here's the kicker: they each thought the other wanted to stay. She thought he'd never move. He thought she wanted to fix it up and keep it forever. Both miserable. Neither talking about it. Scott walks into this mess, has separate conversations with each of them, and realizes they're both stuck in the same hell for completely different reasons. The solution? A conversation that night and three decision-making steps that work for any goal you're avoiding. Important Points Big goals should scare you a little, but if you think you can do them, that's exactly what you need to go after. Being stuck on the fence trying to figure stuff out is more disabling than making the wrong decision and adjusting later. The "how" will always take care of itself once you commit to the "what"—you'll figure it out, you always do. Memorable Quotes "Have you been in a position before where you're on the fence, getting splinters in your ass? Cause you can't figure stuff out." "First comes the what. The what's always there. I don't go with why first. I always go with what first." "About 90% of your goals are not really goals anyway. They're just kind of fixing up life." Scott's Three-Step Approach Decide exactly what you want and when you want to get it—if you can't do that, you won't even get off the starting line. Decide when you're going to start and when you're actually going to finish, and finish means finished, not "a few more things to tie up." Decide how you'll begin and maintain momentum, then trust that the how will take care of itself once you commit to the what. Connect With Me Search for The Daily Boost on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. don't worry about the age, and I'm not really, but I am a little concerned about what they call my biological age. That's the age of my cells and my organs, because I recently learned that's the number one predictor for serious disease, like heart disease and cancer and dementia and a whole lot more. Iick. So when my sponsor, True Diagnostic, sent me a true age test. I was like, yes, let's do this thing. It's a simple at-home test. It helps you uncover your true biological age. You get personalized insights and you take control of your health, basically. Did you know, by the way, that if your biological age is just five years older than your actual age, your risk for major disease goes up by 30 to 50 percent. I didn't know that. It's a little scary. But this good news, I guess, up to 90% of biological aging is driven by lifestyle so you can change it. I'm really excited to see my results. I'm a little scared, but I'm also really motivated. If you care about protecting your health and you want to find out what your real age is, head over to True Diagnostic.com and use my code Boost to get 20% off your entire order or

I find all this stuff, all these tips and tricks and Reddit lists and things that we can do that, you know, productivity stuff. I find that's cool. We want to have those skills, but ultimately, it's what's going on between your ears that makes this stuff work. So today, a little bit more mindset, a very simple three-step framework that will help you with any goal you want to have said and a very personal story that it was kind of fun it was nice to be asked for the help and that happened the other day and I'll share that with you okay it is the daily boost

people laugh at me sometimes this man scott smear that. Listen, if it's so common, why are you laughing at it? It's like, come on, man. It's everywhere. It's like being John Smith of all things. People laugh at that. By the way, the John Smith is a popular 50s name. These days, the equivalent would be what, Hunter or Lathen or something like that. Okay. How you doing? It is me,

3:08.7

Scott. Good to have you here today. And I have the studio to myself today. My wife left, left the house in the studio and left me with the dogs and she went to babysit grandchild number five all day. She'll do that for the next year. He's three months old and she'll take him one day a week for the next year.

3:28.5

I just wonder why she's out of the house and I've already gone to Wawa and got myself a bagel sausage egg sandwich. And she made a sandwich. It's in the refrigerator and I'm thinking,

3:32.8

3:36.2

today before she gets home? Why does it happen? Oh, I just let it out. Well, she'll see it on the credit card anyway. Let's not goals today, yeah? A secret to setting powerful goals. So we're not going to go through a list of setting goals. I'm just going to say this. You should set goals. They should be big, audacious goals. They should be big-ass goals. They should be so big, they scare you a little bit.

3:57.9

But man, if I could do them and I think I can, that's what you need. You don't need small, tiny goals. And you certainly don't need a list of how to set a goal. You should by now know how to set a goal. We teach you probably four times a year. I'll teach you. But for today, we'll do something a little bit different, okay? It's really a potent way of thinking when you can understand that your mind is going to be activated.
