0:10.6	I'm Patrick Miller. What do you owe your government? What do you owe the
0:16.4	president? What do you owe your state? When we think about applying the Bible to
0:21.4	our personal lives, we probably don't find ourselves asking these kinds of questions except when
0:26.8	we're voting or paying our taxes. But for Paul, this was an ever-present question.
0:31.7	Wherever he went throughout the empire, Roman soldiers policed the streets.
0:36.0	They kept the peace.
0:38.0	Governors, pro-curators, provincial leaders.
0:40.0	They were all assigned to their post by Caesar and they ruled over every city and region where Paul lived and of course in those days
0:48.4	Worshipping the gods of the pantheon and especially Caesar. Well that was the cornerstone of civic order.
0:54.6	If you didn't do this, the gods wouldn't bless you
0:57.5	and the social order would collapse.
0:59.4	The world would descend into chaos.
1:01.3	If you didn't do this, you would be considered
1:03.8	an antisocial deviant, an outsider, a threat to order.
1:08.8	And yet Paul and his followers
1:11.2	went one step further, they announced a different king than Caesar. They declared
1:16.4	that Jesus was Lord, not Caesar, that Jesus was the Son of God, not Caesar, that Jesus was the Savior of the world, not Caesar.
1:26.4	All of those titles were normally only applied to the Roman Emperor, and yet Paul and the Christians
1:32.2	had the audacity to rip those titles off of Caesar's head and place them like a crown on Jesus.
1:38.0	You see, this is why Jesus was crucified. Before his death, even the Jews cried out in the Gospel of John,
