Do you know why gratitude disappears in our life?

It's not because the miracles have disappeared.

Something comes into our lives and we adapt to it quickly, good or bad. And the research is very,

very clear on this. If you go up a big tax bracket and you have more

money, it's exciting for a short period than you normalize. Your friends tend to have more money.

The places you go are very normal all of a sudden when they were once a dream. The same thing

happens in reverse. The research is so interesting. It talks about how people

who are even in accidents, who've dealt with losing a limb, after a certain period, come back to

their base level of happiness. It's called hedonic adaptation. We respond, we adapt to things

far sooner than we think we will. And why is this a problem? Well, as human

beings, we're wired for adaptation, so that's very healthy, inappropriate and natural. But this gets us

into hot water when we get too used to the blessings in our lives. We assume our spouse loves us and is loyal and constant. We assume

money should be consistent. We assume we should have great clothes to wear that make us look

fabulous. We assume, we assume. And think about this. When what was once magical becomes expected,

does the magic itself change or is it just us that changes?

The way to combat this is radical appreciation. I go out to my view in Miami every morning and go,
