Summary

That “lost” feeling? It’s not a problem. It’s the process. Today kicks off a special series I’ve been quietly building behind the scenes for a while now. It’s called the CREATE Spiral, and it’s a new framework I’ve developed to help artists understand why we get stuck and how to move forward—gently, without shame, and without needing to have it all figured out. In this first episode, we’re talking about the very first phase of the spiral: Curiosity. If you’ve been in a fog, wondering why noth...

Hey there and welcome to this savvy painter podcast. I am your host, Ann Trees Wood. I'm a painter,

0:06.2

master coach, and the founder of Savvy Painter Growth Studio. So today we are kicking off a special

0:13.5

series on something that I have been developing behind the scenes for a while now. It's something

0:19.7

that I call the create spiral. And I think of it as a

0:25.8

growth path for artists. It's this framework that I'm using inside Gros Studio and within my

0:32.3

private coaching to help artists understand why they get stuck, where they are in their process, and how to move

0:41.5

forward easily, simply, without shame, without any drama. So here's what got me thinking about

0:49.2

this is I think we're all familiar with downward spirals where we just get a thought in our head

0:56.2

and we just start spiraling, adding to it, and pretty soon we're just feeling pretty gross.

1:04.2

So this spiral, the create spiral, I think of it as that growth path for artists.

1:09.7

It's an upward spiral. So it includes

1:12.5

some of the things that we do anyway, but I organize them and reframe them so that they create a

1:19.3

positive momentum in your art practice. Because here's the thing. And I hope this doesn't sound

1:25.8

too obvious, but it's the obvious things that we so often

1:29.9

overlook. But growth isn't linear. And if you've ever felt like you've lost momentum or you don't

1:38.9

even know what you want to paint anymore, it doesn't mean that you're broken. It just means that you're in a very specific

1:46.1

part of this spiral. So this create spiral, it repeats. It's a cycle that we move through as we go

1:55.3

from being a beginning painter to an established artist and on towards mastery. So it's just something that we

2:04.7

continually move through. And today I want to talk about the first phase of it, which is

2:11.9

curiosity. So if you're in this phase, you might hear yourself thinking things like, I don't know what I want to

2:21.4

paint right now or everything just feels kind of blah. Sometimes it shows up with like, I don't know

2:29.3

where I want to take this series. You may have been working on something for a while. When you started it,
