Summary

Today, we continue our examination of difficult public debates, one year after concluding our series, The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling. In Part 1, we provided updates on women's sports, women-only spaces, and transition medicine for minors. This week, we hear from three different trans individuals who share their perspectives on the state of the debate, J.K. Rowling in particular, and the larger idea that good-faith debates are necessary for progress in a pluralistic society. Our guests include Jacob Tobia, author of the book Sissy, and listener-favorite Noah, the teenager who shared his gender transition story with us in episode six of The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling. We also listen and respond to sharp criticisms from popular YouTuber and former Witch Trials guest, Natalie Wynn, aka Contrapoints. We do our best to engage in the kind of good-faith debating that we believe in. As always, we appreciate your time and attention and would be delighted if you shared this show and gave us a rating on Apple or Spotify. Thank you for your support, and please send us your thoughts, feedback, story ideas, or criticisms to our new email address: hello@reflector.show. Thank you to our sponsor. I don't really care for J.K. Rowling, unfortunately, because the comments that she's made I don't agree with.

Someone like her, she really is just truly at the heart, bigoted, hiding in this, you know, sheep's costume,

pretending that she is an ally. I really wish this was not the hill she chose to die on.

The Witch Trials of J.K. Rolling.

Back in our initial reporting for the show, we spoke to many people who were critical of J.K.

Rolling and the coalition on the political left that she had come to represent.

Some saw her as dangerously misinformed. Some saw her as the face

of contemporary bigotry. Others were confused as to why she, of all people, would use her fame and

platform to speak up on this of all issues. She's basically used her platform more often than not to do trans bashing.

1:14.1

So it's like really devastating that an author, like that's this influential,

is also like this obsessively devoted to contributing to the persecution of this group of people

who's already so harassed.

1:27.6

I think to have the author of these beautiful, loving, accepting stories hurting marginalized communities, it sucks.

1:38.3

Yeah, she's super transphobic. She's a turf. She's pretty terrible.

1:42.3

What would you say to her if she were listening? It's just...

God, why? While some of her critics had publicly shamed Rowling and attempted to remove her voice from
