Summary
Today, my guest is Marcia Mercier, a fellow breast cancer survivor and yoga teacher in the U.K. More than two decades ago, Marcia found that the methodical approach of an Iyengar Yoga class was incredibly grounding in the aftermath of breast cancer treatment. Studies corroborate Marcia's experience: Yoga offers a broad array of benefits for breast cancer survivors, from reducing cancer-related fatigue to building bone density, from easing insomnia to improving overall emotional well-being.
Marcia shares her story as well as how she developed a a unique system for reaching women in need of yoga for breast cancer during the pandemic.

| 0:00.0 | Hey everyone, I'm Andrea Ferretti and this is episode 243 of Yoga Land. |
| 0:08.5 | Today my guest is Marcia Marcia. Marcia lives in North London. She teaches yoga there |
| 0:15.0 | and online she teaches yoga for breast cancer. And that's what we're going to talk about today. |
| 0:20.2 | Marcia and I have in common that we are both breast cancer survivors and so because of that I think |
| 0:26.4 | she has a very keen ability to hold space. She's also done yoga for cancer specific training |
| 0:33.3 | so she employs the knowledge and the ability to research to her teaching as well. One thing that's |
| 0:40.3 | really fantastic about what Marcia is doing right now is she's teaching yoga for breast cancer |
| 0:46.2 | online. She wanted to start teaching yoga for breast cancer during the pandemic but guess what? |
| 0:51.8 | Nobody was teaching in person. I mean many of us are still not teaching in person. So she decided |
| 0:57.1 | to go forth and create a system where she felt like she could safely get to know people and |
| 1:02.5 | screen people ahead of time so that she could teach this yoga for breast cancer class online. |
| 1:08.5 | And I say many times in the interview I just think this is a brilliant system and really inspiring |
| 1:14.0 | because for anyone who is going through cancer treatment, either active treatment or just |
| 1:19.8 | after treatment, it can be really hard to get your butt out the door again when you've just come |
| 1:25.9 | back from chemotherapy to get to a yoga class and it can be really hard to just add another task |
| 1:32.3 | outside of the home to your day. So the idea of all of these people being able to be under her |
| 1:38.4 | care and her guidance and have some community and have just a guided way to move their bodies |
| 1:45.7 | and get into their breath makes me really happy. So she's going to share more details about that |
| 1:50.9 | and I also just wanted to before we get into the interview share some of my thoughts about |
| 1:56.6 | mammography. I very rarely take a stand on medical issues. I'm not a doctor and I rarely think |
| 2:05.0 | that's my place but as a breast cancer survivor I'm going to get on my soapbox for a moment and I'm |
| 2:10.0 | going to encourage all of the women I know out there to start getting their annual mammograms |
