Hello, I'm Susan Hume and this is the Yesterday in Parliament podcast.

On Monday, the 13th of April, MPs returned to Westminster to question the Prime Minister about the turmoil in the Middle East.

It's often said that the Prime Minister's first duty is to keep the country safe,

but it seems that doesn't stretch to reassuring our jangled nerves that everything is safe.

The world in which we live has utterly changed. It is more volatile and insecure than at any

period in my lifetime. And we must rise to meet it, calmly but with strength.

Half an hour before Sir Kier Stormer stood up in the Commons,

the US had begun its naval blockade over Iran's ports.

The Prime Minister said the UK would not take part in that.

Instead, Britain would host a summit with France

to find a diplomatic end to the conflict

and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The Conservative leader, Kemi Biedenock,

agreed the world had become more dangerous,

so it really was time the UK spent more on defence,

and she'd be happy to help.

The government has a plan for welfare spending until 2031, but no plans for defence spending.

So I say to the Prime Minister, let's put party interest aside.

I'm glad that they're laughing because I want the public to hear Labour MPs laughing

when we say let's put party in stress

aside. So please keep laughing. Go on. Please keep laughing. And she said she'd support cuts to

other spending to help the UK rearm. Diplomatically, neither Kemi Badernock nor the Prime Minister
