Hello, I'm Susan Hume and this is the Yesterday in Parliament podcast. On Friday, the 27th of March,

the House of Lord spent a 13th day on the detail of the assisted dying bill, which would allow

adults in England and Wales to ask for help to die if they're judged to have less than six months to live.

The bill sponsors have said their intention is that doctors and others should have to opt in to helping with assisted dying.

No one would be pressured to participate.

But some peers want that protection to be spelt out in the bill, or as the non-party peer lady Fox put it.

I think of this group of amendments as the workers' rights group.

Another non-party peer, Lady O'Lone, argued that if people had to opt out of participation

or even from training in the subject, their careers could be harmed.

Many of those who work in healthcare have religious beliefs,

which would preclude their engagement in facilitating others to kill themselves.

Catholics, some other Christians, Muslims would be precluded from participation,

yet may be prejudiced in their employment opportunities

in prospects by this inability to engage. It is important, therefore, that this factor is considered.

Alib Dem, Lord Mohammed interrupted. He agreed that people from those faiths tended not to believe

in assisted dying. But people from those faiths also don't believe in childbirth before marriage.

But is there any evidence to suggest that people are opting out and midbifery because of that reason?

Or is it just your opinion that people from those faiths may not want to take part?

Because I'm from one of those faiths and my noble noble laws may have heard that it's just a dying might not be for me but what's I'm not here to stop others.
