On Tuesday the 4th of November, with the clock ticking until Rachel Reeves' budget later this month,

MPs had plenty of questions for the Chancellor when she appeared in the Commons.

If you were just about to nip out for a full fat fry-up at your favourite greasy spoon,

the Conservative Mark Pritchard has some bad news.

Mushrooms are up, bacon is up, eggs are up, sausages are up, red is up, tea is up, milk is up, and therein is a threat to the full English breakfast.

And there are many things that this government might be forgiven for, but taking away the full English breakfast from a high street is not one of them.

His breakfast-based warning came as the Conservatives urged the government to use the

forthcoming budget to abolish business rates for most high street shops, pubs and cafes.

With speculation about her plans growing, Rachel Reeves yesterday took the unusual step of

making a speech, setting out the choices she'd make,

promising moves to bring down NHS waiting lists, the national debt and the cost of living.

But would that mean breaking a manifesto promise not to raise taxes for working people

and hiking up either VAT, income tax or national insurance?

In the Commons, a shadow treasury minister, Richard Fuller,

wondered, what is the Chancellor's definition of working people? Are our chorus conservatives,

but Rachel Reeves had a ready-made reply. A working person is somebody who goes out every day

to earn their income. They rely on prices that are affordable in the shops, low interest rates,

taxes as low as possible, but also public services that work for them.

Another conservative Dame Harriet Baldwin had a follow-up.
