Hello, I'm Susan Hume and this is the Yesterday in Parliament podcast.

On Thursday, the 3rd of July, MPs welcomed the government's 10-year plan for the NHS in England.

Some of his cabinet colleagues have had a tough old week,

but the health secretary, Wes Streetinging was having a rather lovely time in the

Commons yesterday with questions like these.

I welcome this brilliant plan, and I particularly love the double helix.

The surgeon Peter Prinsley, admiring both the picture on the front of the NHS 10-year

plan brochure and the plan itself. To be sure he is a Labour MP,

but Cabinet ministers can't always be sure of support even from them these days. So Wes Streeting

savoured the moment. I'm so delighted that he has welcomed this plan so enthusiastically.

In fact, Wes Streting's plan for the NHS in England got a warmish

welcome from all sides. MPs often used to complain that their small local hospital was being

closed down and services moved to big centres of expertise, but the health secretary signalled

to move back to treatment closer to home where appropriate.

We will turn our national health service into a neighbourhood health service.

The principle is simple.

Care should happen as locally as it can.

Digitously, by default, in a patient's home if possible,

in a neighbourhood health centre when needed, in a hospital if necessary.

The plan outlines a digital transformation of the NHS and a new focus on prevention of disease rather than treatment. His conservative shadow, Edward Argar, didn't think it sounded

at all bad. This Secretary of State is a rare thing these days.
