Kathy admitted to Ellen that she had been to visit Linton at Wuthering Heights, most days

in the weeks Ellen had been unwell.

Of those days, she had only really enjoyed three evenings.

The others were peppered with unpleasantness,

either in her host's bad temper, his illness, or Harriton's threatening envy.

Once he showed her he had learnt to read his own name above the door into the house, and she had scornfully laughed at him for not knowing the numbers in the date after it.

After Kathy's tale was told, she implored Ellen not to tell her father and allow her visits to go unchecked.
