Kathy and Ellen reached Wuthering Heights to find Joseph, immovable in front of the kitchen hearth,

while Linton implored him to come to him from the inner room.

He was peevish and sickly looking, reluctant to thank her for visiting and choosing instead to provoke her by blaming her for his illness.

When she told him she wished he were her brother and not her husband because husbands don't always like their wives, she told him

that his father didn't like his mother, and he fought back that her mother didn't like her father

and was in love with his instead. For that, Linton received a hard push from Kathy.
