Summary

Bishop Barron was recently appointed as a representative of the U.S. Bishops for the upcoming Synod in Rome on "Youth, Faith, and Vocational Discernment." In this episode, he shares why he thinks this Synod is more important that other recent gatherings, and some of the main reasons why people become "nones" and leave the Church. He also explains why accompaniment involves apologetics and how the two are mutually implicative. A listener asks when Bishop Barron says "love the other, as other," what does he mean by "as other"?

Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Brandon Vot the host and the content director

0:07.8

here at Word on Fire and joining me live on video. This is the first time we're rolling

0:13.3

out these Word on Fire shows, not just on audio, but on video is the great Bishop Robert

0:17.6

Baron. Bishop Baron, good to see you on the show.

0:20.5

Hey Brandon, yeah, same here. It's still life life. We've done this audio, but now we're

0:25.7

even though we're still a continent apart, we can see each other, which is nice.

0:29.4

Listen, just in a couple days here, you have an exciting event going on out there in

0:34.1

California in conjunction with Word on Fire. Tell us about it.

0:37.3

Yeah, this is the preaching seminar. So we invited a priest from all over the country

0:41.9

and we sold out in about a day, I think. We got a 300 and some priests coming from all

0:47.6

across the country to do about two and a half days on preaching. So I'll be giving four

0:53.6

talks. I think there's an open session as well where people can raise questions. We

0:59.0

got liturgies, we'll have music, we'll have social events, etc. So the idea is just

1:02.9

to inspire priests again around this central task of ours. What Vatican II called the

1:10.0

Prima-Mofitium of the priests, the first office of the priest is to preach. And it's been

1:16.4

a passion of mine over the years. And the inspiration was Cardinal Harvey, who was head of the

1:23.0

people household under John Paul II and for a while under Pope Benedict. And he said

1:28.9

to me a couple years ago when I was in Rome, he said, you should have something for, especially

1:33.1

younger priests on preaching because I know a lot of them follow you. So I kind of dedicate

1:38.8

this seminar to Cardinal Harvey. Give us a little teaser, a little preview. What are

1:45.1

you going to be counseling these priests on when it comes to preaching?

1:48.1

Well, you know, I just gave a day on preaching up in Toronto, which is a bit of a warm up.
