Summary

Friends, in light of the recent scandals, I know many people are wondering whether they should remain in the Catholic Church. And I totally get that; the outrage is warranted. But in this time of crisis, I beg you not to flee, but to fight--not violently, with the weapons of the world, but with the weapons of the Spirit. We need you.

I know earlier today we shared our conversation with Bishop Aaron about the sexual abuse crisis,

0:14.8

but Bishop had a little bit more to say. And so he recorded a second clip answering the question,

0:19.9

why remain Catholic? I know a lot of people are in such despair over the abuse crisis that their

0:26.4

impulse is to leave the church. And it's that impulse that Bishop Aaron is responding to in this

by some of Bishop's. I know I spoke to you a couple days ago, but what's been striking me recently

1:13.1

I get it. I get it. But can I also suggest I think this is precisely the wrong strategy at this

1:20.4

moment in the church's life. Leaving is not what we ought to be doing. What we ought to be doing is

1:26.0

fighting. Now let me explain that with a little historical reference. One of my great heroes is

1:32.4

Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln, of course, operated politically at one of the most convulsive times

1:38.7

in our national history when slavery was threatening the very foundations of American democracy.

1:45.6

I mean, Lincoln knew from the beginning of his career that the nation, as he put it, couldn't

1:49.8

survive half slave and half free. But he saw more profoundly too. That slavery as an institution

1:56.6

was repugnant to the very principles of American democracy. Now we can hear that

2:04.0

in the Gettysburg address. In a way, it's sad that this becomes so cliche that we all memorized it

2:10.1

in high school. But let's go back to those words. Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought
