Summary
Bishop Barron recently celebrated his first Confirmations as bishop, confirmingĀ several people atĀ Holy Cross Parish in Moore Park, CA. He shares about that, and also discusses theĀ purpose of Confirmation and the gifts of the Holy it provokes. | 0:00.0 | Welcome back to another episode of the Word on Fire show. I am Brandon Vott, |
| 0:07.7 | the content director at Word on Fire. And with me is the always delightful Bishop Robert Barron. |
| 0:13.4 | Bishop Barron, it is good to be here with you. Well, Brandon's always delightful to be with you too. |
| 0:18.4 | So God bless you. Now you just had a momentous experience. You celebrated your first confirmation |
| 0:25.1 | as Bishop. Many times and many parishes, people are confirmed at Easter time, but there was a small |
| 0:31.4 | contingent of people who were confirmed at one of the parishes in your Santa Barbara region this |
| 0:36.4 | past weekend. So tell us a little bit about that. What was that like as a Bishop confirming people |
| 0:40.8 | for the first time? Well, I must say it was a great experience. You know, it's one of the things |
| 0:44.9 | that really is tied to the episcopacy. Although priests can be designated to confirm kind of on a |
| 0:52.6 | one-off basis, but in the standard approach of the church, it's the prerogative of the Bishop to |
| 0:57.6 | confirm. And so it's one of those times when, all right, I get it now. I'm doing one of the things |
| 1:02.7 | of Bishop is uniquely supposed to do. And that was a thrill. But you know, I was thinking I've now |
| 1:10.4 | administered six of the seven sacraments. So as a priest, obviously, I baptized. I heard confessions. |
| 1:17.5 | I did the sacrament of the sick, distributed the Eucharist to Chorus. I married, etc. But now I've |
| 1:25.0 | administered the sacrament of confirmation. The one that remains now is Holy Order. So I suppose at |
| 1:30.0 | some point, I'll be asked to ordain priests. And that'll be the seventh sacrament that I've |
| 1:36.2 | that I've administered. But it was just it was a thrill. And what I got that day, what I felt, |
| 1:41.6 | let's say on the inside, was this connection to the ancient church, going all the way back to |
| 1:48.3 | Jesus' time, even before, you know, this gesture of laying on of hands and of anointing, |
| 1:52.7 | such an ancient gesture in life of the church. But it's another of the vehicles by which the Holy |
| 1:58.0 | Spirit enters our lives. And I just I felt this continuity with bishops all across the centuries, |
| 2:04.4 | going all the way back to the apostles who anointed and laid hands on people. I just I felt |
