I'm Karen Hunter.

And in this podcast, I'm starting a series called Wisdom of the Elders, where I play a clip of somebody who you may or may not know, but something

that they said that inspired me to bring it into this space today. But also, this is a way for me to

honor the wisdom of our elders, some of them are ancestors, and throw them into the future so that

the next generation can also appreciate what they've left behind.

I feel like if we don't do this work, no one will.

And so it is our responsibility to make sure that people know the names of people that I'm going to highlight in this space.

So today is going to be Sonia Sanchez.

I am not a big poetry person.

I don't read poetry a lot. I'm not someone that writes

poetry, even though I've written 30 plus books. But I so admire Sonia Sanchez and I really

got to appreciate her in class with Carr. Dr. Gray Carr and I started this journey during

a pandemic in 2020 with an episode on Ida B. Wells when I asked

him if we could press record when we were just having a conversation off Mike. And during the

course of the last five plus years, we have been having many conversations. And Sonia Sanchez,

he talked about her during one of these episodes that we do on Saturdays.

And he was telling us about a play that she did.

And the title of it was, uh-huh, uh-huh, but how do it free us?

And something about that phrase hit me right in the pit of my soul.

And I was like, that's it.
