Summary

It's another Mark It Down Monday, and as the 2022 college football season draws near, it's time for Nathan Baird, Doug Lesmerises and Stephen Means to check in with some major predictions. In this episode, it's the Heisman Trophy. And the major question is whether Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud will win it. The pod starts with a discussion of the history of Ohio State and the Heisman, and some Buckeyes who have finished higher up in the voting since Troy Smith brought home Ohio State's last trophy in 2006. Then Nathan, Doug and Stephen each mark down their top three players for the award. At the end of the season, Heisman voters pick a top three, and this is prediction of what that will look like. Stroud is discussed at length. But there's another Ohio State player that also appears on one of the ballots. Thanks for listening to another Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. Hey, hey, where you been, look I talk is about to begin, hey, hey, hey, come on in.

Welcome to Buck I Talk in another market down Monday, I'm Nathan Baird from Cleveland.com

0:29.8

Along with Douglas Mares and Stephen Means and this is always the one where I feel like we are absolutely on the precipice of a season.

0:36.4

We are voting for our preseason Heisman Trophy list. We're going to each give three votes. I guess are we predicting our top the top three finish in the Heisman Trophy Balloting?

0:48.8

Yes, I think we are.

0:50.8

I think that's the best way to say it.

0:52.8

Not the three guys that we wish would win. I think we're trying to predict the three guys that will win the Heisman Trophy and we've done this every year last year.

1:02.8

We were not that close. Doug and I picked Sam Howell, quarterback from North Carolina. He regressed I think in literally every possible passing category.

1:13.8

And there was not a Heisman Trophy candidate really and Stephen pick B. John Robinson, who was good, but not great only played in 10 games.

1:22.8

Neither of those guys finished in the top 10. Obviously Alabama's Bryce Young was the winner. CJ Stroud was already out there in the odds, but had not really separated yet.

1:33.8

And obviously he ended up finishing fourth in the voting.

1:37.8

Does this feel this year, like everything is coalescing around a small group of guys, or does this feel wide open? I remember last year, the topic being how wide open Heisman Trophy race seemed to be already in August.

1:49.8

And this year, it seems tighter, although what do we know? Things are going to change over the next four months.

1:55.8

Sam Howell through three picks in the openers North Carolina lost a Virginia Tech last year. That's how fast that vanish.

2:01.8

I mean, there's a lot of Spencer Rettler juice a year ago. I think there was a pretty clear favorite that he was a guy who had,

2:11.8

previous year, rough start in a strong finish, who was a five-star recruit at a program that had produced multiple Heisman winners as the quarterback of Oklahoma.

2:19.8

And he fell apart very quickly. So it's always interesting. And this used to be I couldn't, I mean, like it used to be feels like very rarely that this happened that the Heisman winner was back.

2:30.8

And now we've had the Heisman winner back many, many times. So the fact that Bryce Young is back. I don't know. It's still a little early. I don't have you guys seen. I have not.

2:42.8

I have not seen the headline of can Bryce Young match Archie Griffith that that does not seem to be something that is, I mean, theoretically, I mean, they're the best team.

2:56.8

And he's the quarterback of the best team. It's not a real hard argument. But I don't know. It doesn't seem like where.

3:03.8

It doesn't seem like a major conversation point in college football a couple of weeks before the season starts.

3:08.8

I think part of it is one. There's a Heisman caliber guy who is also on his team, who if it's going to go to a band, my guy, they might lean his way.
