Summary

It's the final opponent preview podcast of the preseason, as it's time to talk The Game. For this episode of Buckeye Talk on the 12th game of Ohio State's season, Doug Lesmerises doesn't have an opposing team beat writer as his co-host -- he has the Buckeye Talk text subscribers. Doug sent a lengthy survey out to texters, and on this pod he runs through the answers and reads interesting takes on the game. How good will Michigan's defense be without Aidan Hutchinson? How intense are rivalry feelings for OSU fans right now? And, most importantly, at the end, there's a discussion of whether this game qualifies as a must-win for the Ohio State football program and Ryan Day. Hey, hey, where you been, but I talk is about to begin, hey, hey, hey, come on in.

0:26.6

Welcome back to your Tuesday buck. I talk from plume.com. It's Doug Lamarice and it's you. You guys are my co-host for this one. It's the Michigan final opponent preview. We've done 11 podcasts. We've had beat writers on from opposing teams starting with Notre Dame way back. I don't even remember when Notre Dame Arkansas State Toledo was constant. I don't know much of the teams. Rutgers, I think was in there talked about basketball like with the Indiana guy. So let's listen. This has been fun taking you through this, but I wanted this to be with you guys.

0:56.6

Because this is going to be some breakdown of Michigan talent. Shahan, Jay Harajan, I have also done this on the College Football Survivor Show where we did include Michigan as the second big 10 team to make our playoff contender list along with Ohio State as I record this on Tuesday morning and we're getting to you a little bit later on Tuesday and just behind on some stuff.

1:16.6

We have two big 10 teams in our mix of 11 teams and Michigan deserve that. We talked about that there, but I wanted to get a lot of reaction from you guys. Listen, we're going to be talking about Michigan all year. They have an easy schedule. They have some pretty good players and they're going to be in the mix. I think I don't know who's going to knock them out of the mix. So we're going to have plenty of time to talk about Michigan.

1:39.6

So we won't get into their team, but I want to get into your thoughts about the rivalry, about your relationship with Michigan right now because we've never really been here. And I will say, I've never been here because in my time covering Ohio State.

1:57.6

I only had covered one previous Ohio State loss to Michigan and it was the 2011 loss that didn't get wiped away, but then Urban Minor got hired and we knew that that wasn't, you know, a real Ohio State team in 2011. The loss counts.

2:12.1

But that was a crazy year. It wasn't like this. It wasn't a fully functional Ohio State team losing. So I've never gone through this.

2:21.1

And I'm old. And there are some of you out there in our loyal Buckeye Talk Nation among our textures. We have great texture interaction here. If you want to be part of that 614-350-3315, I read everything when I send these call outs.

2:35.9

And I mean, we read a lot of the texts all the time anyway, but when we do a specific call out, I read them all. I just can't use them all because you guys are so smart and so involved.

2:44.1

But we have a good poll that we're going to talk about things, but we got to get a vibe for this. As someone pointed out, there's a, I think a mix here.

2:52.0

It depends what kind of generation of Ohio State fan you are. And I do think that is something that we're going to need to keep in mind during the course of this season that I want to drill into more.

3:05.1

You know, there's always a difference in when you're brought up in Ohio State football, you know, was your favorite player when you were a kid Rex Kern, was your favorite player Archie Griffin, was your favorite player Chris Spielman, was your favorite player Maurice Claret, was your favorite player Braxton Miller, was your favorite player Justin Fields, like it changes who you are as a fan.

3:31.1

From the three three, I'm 26 years old and for as long as I had been following the Ohio State football team basically started in 2010, Ohio State was virtually perfect against Michigan. 2011 was a weird year, so it wasn't crazy when they lost to Michigan that season.

3:43.6

But when we lost to them last year, it truly felt like for the first time for as long as I had followed the team that we truly lost and were not the better team. And that feeling was terrible.

3:54.1

I feel like this game is the most anticipated game for those who didn't really grow up in the Cooper era. People my age just really don't know what it's like that much to have that feeling of losing to them.

4:05.6

And I think it really reignited the fire in the rivalry. I'm so excited for the game on helping we beat the breaks off of them. Thanks again, you guys for all you do.

4:13.1

So that is that kind of Ohio State fan, right? And then we have the Ohio State fans who did live through the Cooper era. And you see that a little bit differently from the 614 Doug, my formative years, a Buckeye fandom were the Cooper years.

4:31.1

I cried so many times on those Saturday afternoons that I will never get over it. We could beat them 50 out of the next 50 games and I would still have a not my stomach for the 51st game, right?

4:40.1

So there are people who losing to Michigan is conjuring right old feelings and there are people for whom losing to Michigan is a completely new experience.

4:51.6

And so I think that's important. We're going to talk about that, but we're going to dive into sort of where this rivalry is. And then we are going to talk about where Michigan is because they do have some big changes.

5:05.1

They lost both their coordinators, Josh Gattis, the offensive coordinator took more money to go to Miami. And I think might have been a little cheesed about Jim Harbaugh's dalliance with the Minnesota Vikings in the off season.

5:16.6

I think maybe for a day, Josh Gattis might have thought he was the next Michigan head coach.
