Will Chesney is a Navy SEAL, author and the handler of elite warrior dog, Cairo. We discuss his journey into the military, fighting an unseen enemy, chasing excellence, becoming a dog handler, Cairo's near fatal heroism, the Osama Bin Laden raid, PTSD, TBIs, canine therapy and so much more.
Two dozen Navy SEALs descended on Osama bin Laden’s compound in May 2011. After the mission, only one name was made public: Cairo, a Belgian Malinois and military working dog. This is Cairo's story, and that of his handler, Will Chesney, a SEAL Team Operator whose life would be irrevocably tied to Cairo's. Starting in 2008, when Will was introduced to the SEAL canine program, he and Cairo worked side by side, depending on each other for survival on hundreds of critical operations in the war on terrorism. But their bond transcended their service.
Then, in 2011, the call came: Pick up your dog and get back to Virginia. Now. What followed were several weeks of training for a secret mission. It soon became clear that this was no ordinary operation. Cairo was among the first members of the U.S. military on the ground in Pakistan as part of Operation Neptune Spear, which resulted in the successful elimination of bin Laden.
As Cairo settled into a role as a reliable “spare dog,” Will went back to his job as a DEVGRU operator, until a grenade blast in 2013 left him with a brain injury and PTSD. Unable to participate in further missions, he suffered from crippling migraines, chronic pain, memory issues, and depression. Modern medicine provided only modest relief. Instead, it was up to Cairo to save Will's life once more—and then up to Will to be there when Cairo needed him the most.

0:19.4 | to this podcast are in some sort of uniform profession. |
0:23.0 | And 511 were founded on clothing, the tactical athletes. So they went to the member of military, |
0:29.5 | the police officer, the firefighter, the EMT, and asked them what do they need to function |
0:33.9 | at the highest level when it comes to their clothing. So their uniforms are reverse engineered from the user back to the manufacturer. |
0:41.9 | Another observation I've made in several departments I've worked at is that we end up with |
0:46.0 | lockers full of worn, faded uniforms. |
0:49.3 | And what I found with the 5-11 uniform that I wore in California was that wasn't the case. |
0:53.8 | They lasted several years |
0:55.5 | and some of the job shirts and jackets lasted way longer than that. So longevity and cost |
1:01.1 | efficiency is also another element to this as well. Yet another layer to this is the female |
1:06.4 | tactical athlete. So they realized that men and women, surprise, surprise, are not shaped the same way. |
1:11.9 | So they started designing uniforms accordingly to fit the female tactical athlete and allow her to be |
1:18.1 | able to move efficiently. So so many reasons why I advocate this company. On top of all, there are the |
1:23.7 | great products, the Norris sneaker, which I think is a great alternative to a station |
1:27.6 | boot, the AMP pack, all missions backpack, and then their civilian clothes as well, their shorts, their |
